Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley's father disappeared when he was at a young age for almost 17 years. Afterwards, Hurley suffered an eating-disorder and after a traumatic accident he was sent to a mental asylum when he started seeing an imaginary person. Ever since, he has changed and has been extremely concious of his sanity and how people view him. When Hurley won the lottery, he was not overjoyed, instead he was fearful that his life was going to change. Hurley is typically happy-go-lucky and keeps the spirits of his fellow survivors up. He has an eating disorder but has managed to overcome that with the help of Libby, and has even stuck to it after her death. He is also the voice of reason in the group, and uses his common sense to solve difficult situations. Ever since winning the lottery with the mysterious numbers, he has searched for an answer for the curse of bad luck that supposedly plagues him.

Default Aaron or someone else?

I was wondering about what Hurley said: "You're not supposed to raise him, Jack." Naturally, the first time I saw that I assmued he was talking about Aaron. But since I've started keeping my episodes on my DVR, I get to watch them several times while waiting for the next one. And the last time I watched this episode, I thought "What if he's not talking about Aaron".
Raise him could mean different things. The island seems to have the ability to bring people back from the dead. What if Jack could have the ability to raise Charlie from the dead? Or his father? Maybe Jack is desperate to go back to the island so he can use it to 'raise' somebody?
It seem counter-intuitive, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if Charlie/Hurley was really talking about someone other than Aaron.

I see what you are getting at but my sense is you are reading too much into the line. The idea that Aaron must be raised by Claire is a long standing theme or subplot. I am fairly certain that Hurley is warning/reminding Jack of this fact. It was an important line and I can see how more or something different could be read into it... but I think not.

I think he was talking about Aaron, only because of what the psychic told Claire - she is the only one who is supposed to raise her baby.

I think that whoever a side from Claire who raises Aaron is the problem.. Charlie plays daddy to Aaron on the island and ultimately dies.. He sacrifices himself to save Claire and Aaron.. For some reason off the island Jack is helping raise Aaron, he ends up a pill popping drunk, trying to commit sucide and all..

I recall that our favorite psysic tells Claire that she has to raise Aaron becuse DANGER SURROUNDS HIM WITH OUT HER GOODNESS IN HIS LIFE... So could it be that anyone who is raising Aaron is in danger.. I don't think it is Aaron who is at risk but anyone trying to care for him other than Claire..

Could this mean Kate could also end up in danger?

Good point Wednighter.

Which makes me think even firmly that psychic didn't know a thing, really I mean I know there's a million people out there to hold the view that the worst mom is preferable to best stranger, but what 'goodness' to come specifically with Claire's presence, anyways? I don't recall seeing her actually showing any care or sincere positive effort for anyone other than herself the entire time they've been on island. (Oh sorry, one time she figured migrating birds might be of help!) Yeah I know she cared for Charlie, but overall I find her to be none other than 'the blonde with the baby' when it comes to thinking/ working collectively for survival. Nothing about her has stroke me so far and made me think there's something special about her..except for being Jack's half-sister.

But like I said, I'm aware that nothing surpasses the mother & child connection. I hope writers add some more persona to this character or reveal a bit more on her significance.

I agree. Claire seems to be kind of a placeholder, nothing more than the one with the baby.

That's actually a really good point. I never thought about it that way. That is really interesting Wednighter

"raised by another" - maybe she actually said "raised by an Other".

Nice! Just to bring this conversation back now that the season final is over :
"You're not supposed to raise him, Jack." - Do you NOW think that maybe Hurley/Charlie was warning Jack not to raise Locke? Not to take him back to the island? Taking Locke's body back to the island might "raise" him and they're warning Jack not to do that?

Question I also thought about "raise"

Meaning to raise the dead, my first thought was Jack was not supposed to try to raise Charlie, then I slipped into the raising of aaron theory, which seemed to make more sense.

Remember, the psychic did not want to talk to Claire the first time, he freaked out and told her to get out.. Then something happened and he
went ahead and did a reading. Then he called someone after she left and told them he did what they asked him. Who was he talking to?

I think he only said that "she was the only one who should raise him" so that she would not give up the child so that he would wind up on the island as planned.. By whom?
Heck.. I don't know.. But she obviously is not raising him now, and she does not want him to be taken back to the island, and she also said (in the cabin) that he was where he needed to be, which was not there.
So I think the psychic's comments are now moot, since it was all just to get the baby to the island in the first place and that was done.

Why did that baby need to be born on the island and who was behind that? What was so important that he be born there? What or who
needed him? Maybe that was the whole reason for the plane crash, the island wanted that baby... AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH This show drives me NUTS!
