Freighter guys survive

Anyone wonder why it seems all the boat people survived the Smoke Monster? Only one was hurt (being carried)and everyone else was ok when Sawyer ,Miles ,Claire and Arron hide from them in the jungle. Smokie sure acted like he was going out to get those guys,and if he was told to restrain himself, Why? It would have been to Bens advantage if all the Boat guys were killed. I just thought it was strange.

I think at least one of them died, I have no idea how the rest were able to survive, the only logical explanation would be that Widmore did some reasearch through the first mates journal and learned how to combat it perhaps?

I wish that it did kill the bastards though. (Pardon my french)

Unless you count the pilot, the smoke monster hasn't killed anyone the first time it encounters them. Both Locke and Echo stared the monster down before it went after them. The pilot was stuck in the plane long enough for the monster to have come by and checked him out as well.

This is a very good point Asher. And why did the smoke monster kill the pilot right off, and then inspect these mercenaries to maybe come back later and finish them off? Maybe somehow Dan and Charolette weakened the monster by what they did in the Tempest station? Ben didn't know about that did he? IDK! Anybody got some thoughts?

I think the Smoke Monster let them live for a reason. I don't know what that reason might be, but as we all know there is a grander scheme, a big picture, a game being played that we don't yet understand. Still not sure why Smokie killed Eko (I wasn't paying close enough attention) but the pilot might have had information that the Smokester didn't want spread? In any event I think if Smoky or it's contoller (The Island, Jacob, Ben?) wanted th mercenaries to be killed, they would have been killed.

I noticed flashes inside the smoke monster while it was supposedly attacking the mercenaries. Do you think smokey was inspecting the mercs with that "light flashy" thing it does?

When Ben and Widmore were talking in Widmore's bedroom, he (Widmore) said something about how the island was his, and he would get it back again. If the island was his at some point, he should know how to handle the smoke monster. And I'm sure he told his crew how to handle it too.

What I thought was funny was that they were shooting bullets at smokey. I mean I guess a it is a pretty natural reaction for the mercenaries to shoot at something that is attacking them, but what good would it do? Seems like they would just end up shooting each other.

So far it seems like sound waves are the only thing that can hurt (or maybe just repel) old smokey. The sonic fence blocked it and when smokey was pulling Locke down that hole they threw dynamite down the hole and I thing it was the sound waves produced by the place that scared it off more than the actual explosion.

Anyways... maybe they were a lot more of the mercenaries and the group we saw carrying that one wounded guy was just what was left.

Maybe Ben didn't want it to kill the guys at all.

Maybe his sole purpose of "summoning smokey" was to buy him time to say goodbye to Alex...

I still don't know what to think about Smokey not killing them or how they survived.. I did notice the light flashing and everything just don't get why Ben unleashed it (if he actually did) unless it was to buy them time to get away..
