Ben seemed a little James Bond-ish this episode, with the weapons and fighting knowledge, the fancy equipment and clothes and all that.

Ben's stick weapon thing in the Shape of Things to Come is the same weapon he used to beat Sawyer in Every Man for Himself. Sawyer had set up a trap to zap Ben, but Ben turned the tables on him by turning off the juice to the polar bear food/water server and beating Sawyer to a pulp instead. Who knew he could do that? And then his James Bond-style butt-kicking in The Shape of Things to Come? Ben sure is spry for a little, aging, bug-eyed guy!

It seems Ben's baton is a weapon, at least that is what Ben called it in the last episode of the season. He asked John to give him back his "weapon" and proceeded to beat the mercenary with it.

I was just thinking about this the other day, and the impression I got at the time was not that Ben is secretly a serious ass kickin' SOB, but that he had already done all this before which I think will prove to have something to do with the nature of the "game" he is playing with Widmore. I think both of them have seen the shape of things to come and have perhaps relived the same series of events more than once.

The impression I think we were supposed to get was how agile little Bennie is, but it's possible he has also lived that moment several times already and knew where they would be standing, and how to incapacitate them.

My proof? None, but I do think that when he entered the Orchid, blew up the teleporter? and went into the hidden tunnel behind it, he knew it was there all along. How? Because he had already been there before!
