We do not know for sure how anyone has time travelled. We just know that they can do it. Couuple of things to note:
1. Ben wakes up surprised instead of calm. This means that either time travel is instaneous or unpredictable.
2. Ben knows the language of the two guys (middle eastern?) which means that the area he lands (either Tirkit or Tunsania dont remember) is where they always land (polar bear also found there)
3. He steals the horse and makes his way to the hotel like if he knew exactly where he was going
4. When he gives his fake name to the hotel receptionist where he is a preferred member and she seems hesitant like she knows he is lying.

As far as Whidmore saying "I know what you are", I think you looking too hard for something that is not there. He just means he knows what Ben has done and what he is capable of doing. For example, he knows about the Purge and the gas on the island. Just referring him as a monster.

I don't know for sure but it seems to me like Ben had escaped something narrowly. His last chance at survival was traveling to another place by transportation? The dating of Oct. 2005 was interesting meaning Ben kept his foothold on the island for ten more months.

I think you all are reading in this too much. Widmore just has his daughter hidden away, I think. Ben cannot go back to the island also.
