Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley's father disappeared when he was at a young age for almost 17 years. Afterwards, Hurley suffered an eating-disorder and after a traumatic accident he was sent to a mental asylum when he started seeing an imaginary person. Ever since, he has changed and has been extremely concious of his sanity and how people view him. When Hurley won the lottery, he was not overjoyed, instead he was fearful that his life was going to change. Hurley is typically happy-go-lucky and keeps the spirits of his fellow survivors up. He has an eating disorder but has managed to overcome that with the help of Libby, and has even stuck to it after her death. He is also the voice of reason in the group, and uses his common sense to solve difficult situations. Ever since winning the lottery with the mysterious numbers, he has searched for an answer for the curse of bad luck that supposedly plagues him.

If Ben can time travel why wouldn't he go back in time a little while and stop Alex from being killed? I think he can just travel back and forth from the island and there is a time difference between the island and the rest of the world. I'm sure Ben knows this and has some idea of when it is but asked the hotel lady just to know exactly or to confirm what he already knew.

This is the same argument that many people used with "Heroes" - why didn't Hiro just go back and prevent everything bad from happening. You could ask that - why doesn't Ben just go back and stop Jack from calling the freighter, or going back and stopping Annie from dying(?), or stop his dad from going to the island, etc, etc, etc.... It wouldn't make for a very good show though. So far - we've only seen Ben travel to the future, not to the past. We've only had flashbacks to show us the past. Maybe you can't go to the past, only ahead and then back to the island at the time you left.

I think he can't change the past because of ''course correction,'' the Lost idea that changing the past is all but impossible. Yeah, maybe he could alter the form of Alex's death, but Fate wants her dead, so it would just find another way to do it.

I wonder, did what Hugo said at the beginning of the episode have something to directly do with this possible "Game" Ben/Widmore are playing!?

Sigh.

This is from Jeff Jensen, who writes a lot of good insights on the show:

Quote:
I choose to see the Risk game as an expression of character ideas. For example, the most interesting thing to me about the game was Sawyer's silly, reckless play to put Australia at risk just so he can acquire...Siberia. Now, what do Australia and Siberia have in common? They're both synonymous with being veritable prisons (Australia being a former penal colony; Siberia being the place the Soviets shipped dissidents and other ''Others''). So here was Sawyer, trading one prison country for another. This, to me, mirrors the flash-forward fate of the Oceanic 6, for whom rescue will lead to another, more figurative form of imprisonment, and perhaps serves as literal foreshadowing for what will happen to Sawyer himself.
