Hugo "Hurley" Reyes
Hugo "Hurley" Reyes is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley's father disappeared when he was at a young age for almost 17 years. Afterwards, Hurley suffered an eating-disorder and after a traumatic accident he was sent to a mental asylum when he started seeing an imaginary person. Ever since, he has changed and has been extremely concious of his sanity and how people view him. When Hurley won the lottery, he was not overjoyed, instead he was fearful that his life was going to change. Hurley is typically happy-go-lucky and keeps the spirits of his fellow survivors up. He has an eating disorder but has managed to overcome that with the help of Libby, and has even stuck to it after her death. He is also the voice of reason in the group, and uses his common sense to solve difficult situations. Ever since winning the lottery with the mysterious numbers, he has searched for an answer for the curse of bad luck that supposedly plagues him.

OK, but so then what is this theory you have about Alex time traveling over and over again? I get the feeling that she knows more than the Losties about what's going on, but not much more. Ben kept her pretty well in the dark.
Anyway, I'm interested to hear your theory.

Oh there seems to be time traveling of sorts, more like rips in time via electrical rips in space and time navigation headings and not apparently a Back To The Future pop culture kind of time traveling.

Maybe Whidmore and Ben are immortals, I know it sounds like some Highlander movie, but I'm thinking more in terms of "The Wandering Jew" or "The Wandering Roman" whichever you prefer. Supposedly a man cursed to walk the earth for taunting Christ on his way to be crucified, until the "second coming" of Christ. Then there are others. This quote is from Lostpedia: A variation on the story was later applied to Longinus, the soldier who pierced Jesus' side while he hung on the cross. Yet another version declares that the wanderer is the attendant Malchus, whose ear Saint Peter cut off in the garden of Gethsemane (John 18:10), who was condemned to wander until the second coming. His action is associated in some way with the scoffing of Jesus, and is so represented in a broadsheet which appeared in 1584.

Well a totally non-otherworldly reading of that moment is simply that Australia is what brought all of the Losties together. They all had some reason or other to be there. Coincidentally all at the same time.
For one thing, I definitely noticed that the first season, when everyone's backstory is being told, there was not a single main character who was in Australia just on a stopover from another flight. Everyone was Australia specifically and for a particular reason. Even the dead couple who Claire eulogized when they burned the fuselage, they were in Australia on a honeymoon. Interesting, right? So they're all there are the same time and each of their personalities and skills adds to the story somehow.

Why the Losties were all in Australia
HURLEY went to Australia to talk to Sam Toomey to find out how to end the curse of the numbers. Sam and Lenny heard the numbers broadcast when they were somewhere in the middle of the Pacific alone one night monitoring code. (During the Korean Conflict??? I don't know.) Lenny was Hurely's Connect 4 buddy at Santa Rosa Medical Hospital who was obsessed with the numbers. Hurley found out after he got to Australia that Sam shot himself in the head, but Hurley got to talk to his widow who did not believe the numbers were cursed. She said "We make our own luck," just like Hurley's father told him in the Camaro just before he abandoned his family.
ANALUCIA & CHRISTIAN were running away from their lives. Christian wanted to say goodbye to Claire and her mother (in a coma) before drinking himself to death Leaving Las Vegas-style. Analucia met Christian at the LA airport and went along as his "bodyguard."
BOONE & SHANNON - Boone flew to Australia to rescue his sister from another abusive boyfriend. Shannon tricked Boone into paying off her abusive boyfriend to leave her, so that she could make some of the money back that her evil stepmother (Boone's mother) stole from her own inheritance from her father.
CHARLEY was convincing his brother Liam to come back to their band, Driveshaft.
CLAIRE was from Australia, and was flying to LA to give up Aaron for adoption.
BERNARD & ROSE: Were on their honeymoon. Bernard secretly chose Australia because he wanted to bring Rose to a faith healer. He didn't tell Rose this plan until they were there.
JACK promised his mother that he would bring his father home from Australia.
JIN & SUN were delivering watches to associates of Sun's father in Australia. Sun planned to run away from Jin at the airport, but then changed her mind when he gave her a flower like old times.
KATE was on the run. We haven't learned why she went to Australia in particular.
?: Does anyone know what brought Kate to Australia in particular? Or how one earth she got there considering she would have had to show a passport at the airport?
LIBBY - We don't know yet why she was in Australia, but some think she was following Hurley.
MICHAEL & WALT - Michael was picking up Walt in Australia after Walt's mother died and Walt's stepfather didn't want him around because "he's different and weird things happen when he's around."
?: Hey, if Michael lived in NYC, why did he fly from Australia to Los Angeles? It couldn't possibly have been a connecting flight to NYC, that wouldn't be any cheaper, it would be more expensive?
SAWYER went to Australia to kill the man he thought was the cause of his father's murder suicide of his mother.
Did I leave anyone out?
