I think the Temple is an underground station that spans the whole island. There are various entrances and exits throughout the island. There are connections between the Temple and every station on the island. There is also a connection to Ben's house. That is why (forgot her name but met Juliet in the jungle) was able to get to Ben and get the message to Juliet.

i think the temple is the portal that links the island to the outside world, and that is how ben and tom and richard, et al, travel back and forth.

folie a deux, i think i know what your name means. i read this book once about different kind of "mania's" like trictotilamania (sp?) where someone will systematically pull every single hair out of their body one and a time, and erotomania where people fall in love with a public figure (like a celebrity) and can't differentiate between fantasy and reality and think that the person is in love with them too and sending them messages through their songs, etc...

anyway, it was a great book, and one chapter was called FOLIE A DEUX. it was about when someone is in close proximity and constantly around another person who has a mania, they will get the mania, sort of like catch it, like a disease. i think that's also where the term "cabin fever" comes from. so, if a guy was in a cabin in the woods with another guy who had paranoia, then the first guy would develop paranoia eventually because he was constant exposed to and exclusively around the guy who had paranoia.
i believe there was an xfiles episode called folie a duex.

Interesting. This would make sense, especially after Ben told Karl that not everyone on the island should know about the Temple. I was at first thinking that the Temple was left from some of the early inhabitants of the island, a theory I'm sure this thread has already discussed. Do we know if any of the "others" have been off the island since the sub exploded? If so, that would help prove that Ben has another means off the island that not everyone knows about. The Temple would house some sort of device to get them where they need to go. Another sub? Or something a little more Star Trek?

I thought Ben and Tom said that, since the "purple sky" event, anyone that left the island on the sub would have been unable to return. The purple sky event (EM Pulse?) made the sonar signal inoperable. Remember Locke getting the Dharma message saying that after he tried to activate the sonar on the Flame station computer?
There was something interesting that Juliet mentioned once, it seemed in jest. When Kate asked her what they were building with all those rocks that Kate and Sawyer were breaking and moving during their captivity, Juliet said that they were building a runway...for the aliens from space. If a balloon or helicopter can make it to the island perhaps a plane can land on it, with the proper approach.

I think that is very interesting what you were saying about the rocks and the runway. That would be very fitting with Juliet's character to say something like that very straight as though she is being sarcastic (why would I tell you the truth), but have it be the truth. If so why would they be building a runway? For the aliens from space?

If the temple provides Star Trekish passage off the island (a definite possibility) and they still had the submarine why would they build a runway? For the aliens from space?

The producers verified at least a year ago that aliens are not involved in LOST.

Of course, they also said time travel was not involved, so go figure...

Anyone think that maybe the Volcano that the producers said we would see again might have something to do with the Temple?

I am in overall concurrence, furthermore perhaps Karl would have been allowed to visit the holy grounds if he had been successfully brainwashed. The Temple is most likely exclusively DHARMA and 'Enlightened Persons' territory.

Also Wednighter, if the Volcano was the Temple that would be awesome. I'm sure the writers of LOST were Bond fans, and would enjoy giving a nod to Bond by having a Volcano base.
