The time line for Michael's adventures since he left the island with Walt is very tight and somewhat confusing as to how he had enought time to recover from a car wreck and meet with Tom and get on the freighter.

Michael and Walt left the island on day 67

Naomi parachutes onto the island on day 87

So at least by days passed on the island Michael is only gone for 20 days.

Thats almost 3 weeks. And in those 3 weeks he:

Traveled from the island to New York.
Put Walt up at his mother's house.
Got an apartment/hotel room.
Tried to kill himself by driving car into shipping container.
Recover from car wreck in hospital.
Met with Tom.
Traveled to port where freighter leaves from.
Travel on freighter to island.

Maybe some other things too, but I think these are the main things.
IDK it doesn't seem like he had enough time.

Also I know we have been talking about time differences on island and off, but it doesn't seem to be that big of a difference.

Michaels mom said they had been gone a couple months which makes sense because he was on the island for 67 days.
And it is christmas time on the island, and when Des calls Penny it is she has her Christmas tree up.

This bothers me in that it doesn't seem like the kind of writing error the Lost guys would make. No way he has time to recover from the car crash. So is this a miracle "Island style" recovery or is this event not in the timeline the way it was presented. Are there any other explanations or is this just a writing mistake that we are expected to not notice? Seems unlikely that it is an error so what's the story?

Yeah I don't think it is an error by the writers/producers.
I am sure they will give and explanation as to how he was able to do so much in just three weeks.
It may just be simply that he left the hospital early. His injuries probably would call for him to stay longer, but maybe he just got up and left after a couple of days.

In my own mind I thought that since the island was controlling Michae's destiny (not allowing him to kill himself with via the car and then the gun) I figured the island also help speed up his healing just like Locke had encountered - so that he could accomplish his purpose. Locke was shot on day 92 of the island (Walt told him to get up on day 93) and yet here on day 99 he is walking around.

Yes that must be it. The quick healing is Island related, like Locke getting shot. Still it is irritating that he would be in a neck and body cast barely able to move and then out having a fight a week or so later. On the Island I can see noone questioning Locke's recovery, but one would think in a NYC hospital someone might notice. For example that nurse that took an interest in Michael and asked a few questions, think she might wonder how he recovered that quickly from injuries that would keep most people down and at least in PT for a year or several years or forever.

i only saw a neck brace on michael in the hospital. it could be that he was not hurt as badly as he could have been because the island feels he "still has work to do".

The Island allowed him to recover quicker. Just like it wouldn't let him kill himself yet..

Well yes that is what we are discussing that this "still has work to do" thing caused him to heal more quickly. My new point however is that wouldn't someone at the hospital have questioned this MIRACLE healing. Remember what Ben said about the Virgin Mary in the moss. BTW he definitely had some sort of brace or cast around his entire chest.

maybe the island did help in his healing, but I still think that he just left/snuck out of the hospital early.

This is exactly why I gave the episode a 3 in the rate it thread. They left too many things open to question.

We are ignoring an important part of this timeline...we still don't know what exactly happens between Michael leaving the island on the boat with Walt and getting home. As he leaves Otherville, don't forget that Ben tells everyone "not to worry, he won't tell anyone" or something like that...

Ben or someone must have had contact with Michael between the time he left the island and returned home. Unless Ben thinks his murdering of the two women was enough to keep him silent, but I doubt it. Michael would have a lot of explaining to do. You know he didn't putt that little boat all the way back to the US from the south Pacific. So, how did he explain his lack of a passport, paperwork, etc? What happened to the boat after he got off it? There just had to be some additional contact made with him by the others before he meets Tom in the alley.

Also, we see Michael at his mothers house and her complaining that she can't call them by their names. How did Michael get an apartment or hotel without a name or an id? We know Ben has many fake ids, my guess is that they hook Michael up with some kind of fake name and id prior to him being given the Kevin Johnson passport. That would make more sense.
