Why would Michael work for Ben after all he did to Walt?
I think Michael realized how special the island was after he left and that is why he is trying to protect it

I think Ben is constantly blackmailing Michael, making him think that Walt is still alright and if Michael does everything Ben says, they will be reunited.

Could it be that Ben gave Michael the incorrect settings to get off the island knowing that by not going the correct route or settings can do certain things to a person's mind this way Ben can keep Widmore from finding the island. So let's say Michael and Walt are on this course that Ben gave them Michael mind goes wacko, so the boat their on become adrift and the freighter find the boat and take at least Michael aboard and gives him dutys like swamping the decks.
Now the big question is where is Walt?

Walt is a smoke monster or hanging out with the "others." Ben prob. ordered Michael to destroy the equipment.

I'm thinking that Ben doesn't like the fact that the freighter people are trying to find out the truth about the plane wreckage. So he's trying to get Michael to convince Sayid and Des to not trust the captain.

I think Michael has no memory of Michael or Walt and that's why there's no look of recognition or guilt on his face when he sees Desmond and Sayid. He's been brainwashed, kids. Brainwashed. Maybe cloned, but I'm gonna go with brainwashed. He's been reprogrammed as Kevin Johnson.

But if he was brainwashed, then it isn't him giving them help, and dropping them notes. Plus he tried to avoid getting in sight of Sayid and Desmond when the doctor called him to clean the room.
I think he know exactly who he is, and exactly what he's doing. He's trying to get Walt back. Ben somehow has Walt, and Mike wants him back and is willing to work for Ben to get what he wants.
Interesting, especially considering the arrangement Sayid and Ben have after the island (thank to the flash forwards).

Maybe he never left the island with Walt. Walt does have a knack to be in two places at once.
