James Ford

James Ford, better known by the alias of "Sawyer", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Sawyer's early life was ravaged by the con man who ultimately claimed both his parent's lives through conning them, instantly orphaning him. As a child, he wrote a letter to this con man, hoping to deliver it to him in person one day. Sawyer set out to search for him, presumably after he left school, however he, himself, ultimately became a con man and became the man he was hunting, became Sawyer. Revenge plays a big part in Sawyer's life, starting with the real Sawyer. On the island, Sawyer has often used his abilities to con people to get his wishes, and keeps a stash of useful items with him. However, after the death of the real Sawyer, he has begun to rethink his ways and is slowly turning into a leader for the survivors.

He escaped from the captivity of the Others with Kate, and has formed a relationship with her.

Default Thoughts on Ben

Thoughts about Ben's preoccupation with the ladies and pregnancy.

I think that when Harper says, "you look like her" she is referring to Annie. I think that Ben did not gas Annie and I think he also got her prego. Or at least someone did. I also think that she died from this pregnancy (obviously, since she is on the island). Ben lost the two most important women in his life to pregnancy related issues. Thus, his fixation.

Also, Ben tells Juliet that she belongs to him. Well, I think the island "told" ben that he belongs to the island by giving him cancer. Ben has lost his focus on the island related issues (preoccupied with Juliet and preoccupied with fertility problems) and the island decided to let Ben know who the boss really is and dropped mad cancer on his ass.

Just my opinion. Thoughts?

I like the first part.
I was thinking the same thing about Annie probably died because of the pregnancy problems.

But the second part I don't really agree with. The island is definitely like a character on the show, but I don't really see it behaving like a person and making decisions. I think it can and does affect people, and to some degree this would mean the island has a kind of control over some characters. I just don't see the island as having a conscience, now the smoke monster well........ who knows.

Good comment. I think you're right. There was a conversation between Richard and Locke not so long ago, where Richard says: "Ben has lost focus. The pregnancy stuff is not the big issue; we are here to do much more important things." Or sumpin' like that.

Oh, I totally agree with you about the island not behaving like a person. I just meant it in a more figurative sort of way. Like he wasn't behaving in accordance with the island and thus reaped what he sowed. I was just pointing out a sort of mirroring in the episode with the island figuratively owning ben and ben making the attempt at also owning Juliet.

The two most important woman in his life are Alex and Annie according to commentary season 3 in The Man Behind The Curtain.

Ben's tumor could also be a result of the travels he's made from and to the island...like some side effect triggered by messing with EM (which is part of time traveling unless I'm mistaken).

This is my first post here so I'm not sure what all has been discussed, but I searched for Ben's tumor and this was the first thread to come up.

I think Ben got his tumor from Rachel (Juliet's sister). Ben told Juliet that he would cure her sister's cancer for her if she stayed on the island and helped them cure their issue with pregnant women. I think Ben went to Jacob and told him about Rachel's cancer and Jacob said he would cure Rachel, but the cancer can not just disappear, so Jacob gave the tumor to Ben, and that is why he was not surprised when Juliet told him about it.

That is a really really intriguing idea you have, baseballnelie. I never thought of that! Times when I love Losttalk... You should put it in the theories section where it won't be overlooked.

Like in Steven King's The Green Mile where JOhn Coffey gets the bad stuff inside of him when he removes it from someone.
