Boone Carlyle

Boone Carlyle was a middle section survivor of Oceanic Flight 815 and was Shannon's stepbrother. He attempted to assume a semi-leadership role with the survivors but failed due to being rash and young, though he became Locke's apprentice when the two formed a close bond. Boone survived on the Island for 41 days before he died of injuries sustained in a fall whilst he tried to contact 'rescuers' from the drug smugglers' plane. According to Locke, Boone was a sacrifice the Island demanded.

Default Horseshoes

Did anyone think that a game of horseshoes between Sayer and Hurley was an odd way to end the episode? We hadn't seens either character all hour and then all of a sudden there they are.

And Hurley is apparently really good too. He also seemed surprised at how good he was. This reminded me of that he was also very good when he was beating Jack in a game of Horse in the season premier.

Is there a connection? We have seen Kate's horse on the island befor but I don't think that's it.

The only thing that I can coe up with is that it is a refernce to the freighter being a Trojan Horse.

Any thoughts?

I find it interesting that Hurley has always been pictured as quite good in whatever sports or rec. games he plays.. Table tennis, golf (did he play or did he just watch Jin and Jack?), basketball, that game he plays in the institution (FF) and now the horseshoe thing. I wonder if the horseshoe scene entailed some reference to the element of chance or luck? Like Hurley playing better than Sawyer ---> Hurley's got better chances with staying alive.

I couldn't bring myself to write James' going to die.

well, in that scene, after hurley makes the winning shot, sawyer is going on about it, and hurley starts to say, "some people say i'm just luck-"

he doesn't finish his sentence because thats when they see ben walking by.

now, hurley has had an odd relationship with luck since he came in contact with those numbers. good fortune seems to follow him, but bad fortune plagues those around him.

it could mean that hurley's luck is going to run out...

horseshoes as luck

horseshoes as links to the vulva

{and the Island kills pregnancys}

The Horseshoe

"THE HORSESHOE

Without a doubt, the most commonly encountered lucky charm in modern North America is the horseshoe and its representative models in the form of jewelry, wall hangings, and printed images.

This little horseshoe, shown here life-size, is actually a hand-forged pony shoe that my daughter Althaea and i discovered and dug out of the ground one day in 1976 while we were walking an old logging trail through the woods in the Missouri Ozarks. It probably dates from the 1910s to 1930s.

The use of worn-out horseshoes as magically protective amulets -- especially hung above or next to doorways -- originated in Europe, where one can still find them nailed onto houses, barns, and stables from Italy through Germany and up into Britain and Scandinavia. Additionally, wall hangins made in the form of horseshoes are common. In the Middle-East, one finds the terra cotta blue-glazed horseshoe plaque. In Turkey small metal or blue glass horseshoes are blended with the protective all-seeing eye to form a unique apotropaic charm i call the horseshoe-and-eyes that is believed to ward off the evil eye.

There is good reason to suppose that the crescent form of the horseshoe links the symbol to pagan Moon goddesses of ancient Europe such as Artemis and Diana, and that the protection invoked is that of the goddess herself, or, more particularly, of her sacred vulva. As such, the horseshoe is related to other magically protective doorway-goddesses, such as the Irish sheela-na-gig, and to lunar protectresses such as the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is often shown standing on a crescent moon and placed within a vulval mandorla or vesica pisces.

In most of Europe, the Middle-East, and Spanish-colonial Latin America protective horseshoes are placed in a downward facing or vulval position, as shown here, but in some parts of Ireland and Britain people believe that the shoes must be turned upward or "the luck will run out." Americans of English and Irish descent prefer to display horseshoes upward; those of German, Austrian, Italian, Spanish, and Balkan descent generally hang them downward. "

I think Hurley is one of the keys to Lost due to his luck. If you think about it his luck is the exact opposite from when he was off island. He had horrible luck since using the numbers to win that money. However, once he got on island he had great luck (this carried forward to the FF). Ping pong, horseshoes, horse, starting the Dharma Van, thwarting the Others beach take-over using the Dharma van (that was pure luck - it shouldn't have worked), getting on well with Libby, finding the food, connect four, controlling Sawyer to be the leader, and on and on and on till the break-a break-a dawn. I'm sure there are many more examples of Hurley's good luck taking control.

So, in answer to your question...I think Hurley will be a major player in the future Lost scenes. This is an awesome development as I think Hurley is one awesome dude. Go, go , gadget Hurley!

True dat, true dat zedsDead. However, Hurley's luck cannot trump the Uncanny super abilities of Walt. I bet Hurley beats anyone else tho... hehe...

Game horse shoes are way to big for any horse to have ever worn them.
