Dr. Juliet Burke

Dr. Juliet Burke (née Carlson) is a member of the Others. She seems unhappy with her allegiance (particularly, it seems, with Ben's position of authority), and lives at the Barracks. Juliet is a calm, intelligent woman with a background in medicine, but unhappy with her private life and will do anything to get off the Island. However, it seems Juliet has betrayed her people and joined the survivors in wanting off the island.

What I'm confused about is what was actually going on with Dan and Charlotte in the chamber where they confronted Juliette..So their order was to activate the release of some toxic gas to get to Ben, or 'stop' him (?)..Or was it Ben's plan as a last resort from Widmore's intervention, and Daniel & Charlotte, being aware of it, wanted to prevent it? And Juliette, was first asked to kill the two to avoid the massive poisoning, right? But then she didn't. ??

By the way, I'm disappointed not to see Richard Alpert when people want to play around deadly chemicals. I thought he was to show up at some point..

the gas in question i believe is the same gas that ben used to kill all the dharma people.

this gas was being held on the island i think as a defence system. it is assumed that ben would use it to kill anyone who invaded the island. harper told juliette to stop dan and charlotte, saying that if they release the gas they will kill everyone. but their intent was not to release the gas, it was to render it inert. meaning, changing it's chemical properties so that it's not dangerous anymore. making it useless to ben.
but juliette didn't know that until she got there. then dan told her we are not going to release it we are going to make it safe so ben can't use it to kill everyone and juliette wasn't sure if she was going to believe them or not but then she did believe them.

sorry, run on sentence.

It's probably in the dispersion system. Judging by the look of the original dharma people that Ben killed, the gas is unleashed either very, very quickly or everywhere on the island at the same time.

I agree it was some type of failsafe installed by the original dharma people to neutralize everyone on the island in case something happened. Ben obviously knew about it. The freighter people knew that he knew about it and wanted to shut it down cause they thought Ben would gas the whole isand in order to protect it from outsiders.

pchee, thanks for the clarification. But then, both sides believed at one point that the other was to attempt mass poisoning, yes?

yes. the freighters believed that ben and the others were going to use it against them. and when charlotte and dan headed over to the tempest, i guess the others thought THEY (meaning the freighters) were going to use it instead. especially since they had gas masks with them. but it turned out they weren't going to use it, they just wanted to make it inert, so that NO ONE could use it.

I'm sure Wikipedia would suggest a few names and some good explanation, probably under chemical weapons, chemical warfare..?

Pchee, please share my sadness for this was yet another episode sans Richard Alpert... And this was totally his thing too!

No Richard as long as his show "Cane" is still on the air, I fear.
