Zed,I was wondering that myself. Why not just tell Jack and the rest about the plan.Unless the were worried that they couldn't be trusted. I think Daniel and Charlott need to come clean about their purpose for coming to the island. They admitted they didn't come just to rescue the 815ers.(probably it wasn't on their list of things to do at all).

If Charlotte & faraday told Jack & the crew they ran thr risk of being overtrown and using the threat of the gas against them unless they get answers and get everyone off the island and on to the boat. Thereforte they need to do it in secret first and explain after.
Ben knew the gas would be a major aspect of the plan of whitmore either from his source on the boat or because it's common sense that whoever controlled the gas would have control over the lives of everyone on the island and that means power.
So, i believe that when ben was being held at the end of season 3, he asked his Alex, Karl and rousseau to do him a favour. The favour would be to go to the Temple and get Harper to force Juliet to kill Faraday and Charlotte.
We already know he wants them dead, he shot Charlotte in the chest.
If he can kill the staff of the Freighter he can re-group and make arangements for the next wave of invasion and protect the Island from Whitmore and or Dharma.

QUESTION: I am thinking that the Tempest is quite important, it provides power to the island and holds a powerful gas that has the power to kill everyone. WHY WAS IT NOT GUARDED???????????????

Well the last person we know was in charge of the Tempest was Goodwin correct? Maybe with all the drama that has taken place Ben didn't know of someone he could send there that could be trusted?

I'm not being nit-picky, but Goodwin wasn't in charge (that we know of!) at the Tempest. But I like the question about why wasn't that station being guarded. We know that the "fake" hatch door in the little Bea Klugh village was being guarded with guns (and as of yet, that was nothing, just show for Michael). Why if Widmore, or whomever the powers that be are, are coming for a WAR on the island, the beginning of the end, all that - why would you not protect the toxic gas and power? And if it was toxic why didn't Goodwin have on a protective suit... shouldn't he have still had the suit on if he got burnt, not just a flannel shirt? Hmmm... Also we know that Goodwin was a man of many talents because he also helped out in the surgery.

Does anyone think that Goodwin's "burn" looks anything like Juliet's "burn"? (I, of course, don't mean the shape

I'm not sure about the burns being similar I guess it could happen, but at the same time everybody was on the smaller island (with the hydra station) when Juliet received those burns.

queenbeesteph, I didn't check the episode script on Lostpedia so I might be wrong about this, but did not Goodwin mention to Juliette something along the lines of being in charge of some deadly chemicals? I'm referring to the scene where they had wine by the beach..

JULIET: Ben wouldn't like it.

GOODWIN: That's what this is about? You're worried about Ben? Why? Because he has a crush on you?

JULIET: You know?

GOODWIN: Come on. Everyone knows. He follows you around like a puppy.

Is this what your refering to Flaneuse? This was the conversation I was thinking of when I wrote my earlier post. I really didn't mean in charge either.. But he was the one working there.. Sorry for the confusion Queenbeesteph

I wrote on another thread earlier that I think Goodwin was put in charge of the chemicals/ gas station by Ben- based on my impression of the dialogue you quoted. Perhaps he was not totally in charge but he must have had his hands on some pretty big projects going on in there, I think.
