daniel protecting the island?

so, I'm guessing that daniel was removing the possibility of ben using the gas as a last resort to kill everyone but himself, or essential people. How did Mr. Whidmore know of the gas or that was even a possibility? The actual enemy or bad guy of the island is still up in the air for me.

Ben would use the gas as a fail safe. I think he would do whatever it takes to keep the island from falling into the wrong hands.

Just because Ben said that if the freighter people made it to the island every living person would die... Doesn't mean that he wasn't going to be the one killing them to save the island.. He may not have wanted to kill everyone on the island but he would for the greater good of protecting the island

Preventing Ben from using the gas to kill people to "protect the island" only justifies that Daniel is amazing :]
