Tell me what to make of this?

Damon Lindelof said in a interview with EW that one of the things we should be "mulling over" is after Penny gave Des her number, he lived his life knowing he needs to be on a freighter on christmas eve 2004,for him to have any chance to be with her. Do you think they will go back and show us anything to cement that fact. Just a thought

I don't know, it seems to me Desmond as well as Daniel forgot about the fact that they met in the past. I mean, they didn't recognize each other? That's how I understood the whole thing. So, if you see it my way, Penny doesn't remember now that Desmond asked her for her number back in the past. I'm not sure, though, time traveling theories are always confusing...

It was just his mind that travelled trough time right? since every time he or minkowski would jump they would appear catatonic. Then wouldn't the "des-mind" (ha ha little joke there) that knows everything that is going to happen in the future, then leave his past body right after he physically left penny's apartment and jump back to present desmond? Therefore the desmond in the past is again blind to his future actions?

in that last scene when des in 2004 is talking to penny on the phone, they show des in 1996 walking down the street leaving penny's place. he first looks troubled but then as the 2004 des and penny speak to each other, the 1996 des starts to smile as he is walking and looks like he is contented by something. what does that mean?

It means he knows she loved him and would wait for him without changing her number. It means he found his constant and knew he wasn't going to die a horrible death like Minkowski.

I think it also means that the rest of Desmond's life was pretty much planned out for him and Desmond--a coward--woudln't really have to make any decisions. Nor did he have to feel ashamed for failing so many times in his life. It was a pre-set path. Not his fault.

And he had a life with Penny to look forward to after the freighter.

I watched flash before your eyes, I'm sure this must have came up someplace, when Des tells Charlie what happened when he turned the key was that his first time he "mind traveled" or whatever we are calling it? Because when he awoke on the floor covered in paint with Penny at his home he looked a little confused"not just from the fall"

You couldn't live through a life that was planned for you could you? You'd mess it up somehow right? On the other hand if it was just single major events that moved you trough your life, I guess you could pull it off.

In flashes before eyes that women in the jewelry store was telling him everything he needed to do up to the point where he turns the key in the hatch! has anyone watched that episode again recently?

I watched it recently.. I have watched it many times.. Mrs. Hawking is telling Desmond that he doesn't marry Penny he walks right out the door.. While the small fact that he did buy the ring the second time around didn't change the fact that he still didn't marry Penny.. He did join the Military.. He did end up on the island..

I think that he did live out the path that was laid out for him even though in Flashes he did have the chance to change everything.. Remember in the bar the second time when he realizes he isn't crazy he had the wrong day.. He tells the bartender that he thinks he made the biggest mistake of his life and he doesn't think its the first time..

The big difference if you ask me about the "Constant" and "Flashes" is the fact that Desmond knows that he is time/mind traveling in the Constant, in Flashes he calls it Déjà vu
