Charlie Hieronymus Pace
Charlie Hieronymus Pace was a survivor from the middle section of Oceanic 815. Before the crash, Charlie was the bassist and main songwriter for the rock band Driveshaft. When Flight 815 crashed, Charlie was snorting heroin in one of the plane's bathrooms. Charlie's drug addiction and crippling self-doubt were the biggest obstacles in his life. Like many of the Losties, the crash provided Charlie with a fresh start. On the Island, Charlie formed a relationship with Claire Littleton and her son Aaron.
After avoiding deaths foreseen by Desmond several times, Charlie finally died willingly to save the other survivors. He drowned on day 93, and his death is yet unknown to anyone except Desmond.

I think that he did live out the path that was laid out for him even though in Flashes he did have the chance to change everything.. Remember in the bar the second time when he realizes he isn't crazy he had the wrong day.. He tells the bartender that he thinks he made the biggest mistake of his life and he doesn't think its the first time..
The big difference if you ask me about the "Constant" and "Flashes" is the fact that Desmond knows that he is time/mind traveling in the Constant, in Flashes he calls it Déjà vu

I'm all about the "you can't change the past" line of thinking but this topic intrigued me...
What if, when Des got the number and saw Faraday, he did change the past they just didn't remember it right away? I've got a good simile but let me just state I'm not advocating getting blackout drunk to the youngins on here. Its similiar to the memory loss after a night of drinking. When you wake up you can't remember the whole night but if someone, or something, triggers your memory you begin to be able to recall certain events. Basically Des changed the past in 1996 but it didn't create a "new" memory in their 2004 brains. Only when Desmond actually called Penny and Faraday saw the note did they begin to recall the 1996 events. The only way that the past exists is in our memory of it.

So, wait, Desmond wasn't lying when Penny's father asked him if he had ever served in the military??? I thought he lied because he didn't want to admit that he'd been kicked out and sent to military prison. I'm confused.
So, maybe Widmore was the one who gave Desmond the idea to join the military? How funny is that? Desmond allows Widmore to change his whole life because Widmore doesn't think much of Desmond, but Desmond apparently thinks the world of Widmore. Sad, really.

I interpreted Penny saying "so I'm not crazy"" or whatever simply to mean that she had been searching for Desmond for 3 years and for 3 years everyone had been telling her that Desmond was dead and to get on with her life.

Even when Penny was on the phone with Desmond she said something about the phone call confirming that she wasn't crazy. Maybe she inadvertanly saw somthing of her fathers dated 12/24/2004 and she was like, "Didn't Desmond say he was going to call me on that day?"

Right I don't think that Des was lying to Mr Whitmore in Flashes about being in the military since it had not happened yet.. He joined after he didn't ask Penny to marry him the second time.. My guess he wanted to do something great in the military and instead was kicked out.. That is why when she meets him at the stadium he has to join the boat race... He feels he still needs to do something "GREAT" to be worthy of Penny since according to Whitmore he is not worthy of drinking his whiskey and not worthy of marrying his daughter..
