Bernard Nadler

Bernard Nadler is a tail section survivor of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 and the husband of Rose. He is the only tail section survivor that has not been killed, captured, or assimilated in to the Others. He wasn't seated in the tail section, and was only there when the plane crashed because he was using the bathroom then. Bernard cares very much for Rose and feels a need to fix things, like her cancer, not dissimilar to Jack.

I'm not sure he would actually need one. It only seems necessary if you develop 'the sickness' which not everyone does when leaving / going to the island. Daniels note says If anything goes wrong Desmond will be his constant. I also get a feling that Ben can maybe leave the island by other means and at will (the magic box perhaps).

Not everybody needs a Constant guys. I am very sure that the way Ben travels doesn't put him at risk of this. Plus Daniel said it only happens to some people. Also people who are near eletroc magnitizem (Like that Hatch. Desmond was there ALOT)

Therefore Ben doesn't need a constant therefore he doesn't have one.

and his role as caretaker

I think they all need a constant but not all may time travel

as in real life "everybody needs somebody"

or something to keep em grounded

..create meaning..

help em stay sane in this neurotic race for time and space

He doesn't need one because he wouldn't be at risk of developing the 'sickness'. Ben's people know what they are doing and are not at the mercy of the island. Remember when Juliette makes her journey to the island? Richard drugs her and they enter with what we assume is a submarine. We don't know what they do to her after she passes out or what means of transportation they take for the majority of the trip. Whatever their method is, they have managed to alleviate all potential side effects.

When Ben tells Jack that calling the freighter is a mistake and that everyone on the island will die, I'm sure he is talking about something they will do once there but he could also mean that if they were to just leave the island by traditional means they will not survive.

If I were to agree with the idea that every Lost character must have some constant for traveling from & to the island, I'd say it can well be Richard Alpert for Ben. On the island, Richard seems to be the face he knows for longest and he is the one who made Ben's 'rebirth' possible (I'm referring to the mass poisoning of Dharma people carried out by Richard & Ben). We've also seen Richard off the island on 3rd season as well (Juliette episodes) so Richard might work for Ben if he were ever to need a constant.

I think this idea of a "Constant" is being taken too far. Not everybody needs one. Daniel told us that. Only people who have been exposed to large amounts of radiation AND travel to/from the island (and maybe go off the 325 bearing) could experience "side affects".
We could assign Constants to everyone on the island...but the don't necessarly need them.
