Johnathan "John" Locke
Johnathan "John" Locke is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. His paralysis was immediately healed upon crashing on the Island, which has ultimately led him to believe he has some sort of special connection to the Island. He is sometimes shown in antithesis to Benjamin Linus, sharing several traits including the ability to commune with Jacob. Seen as antithetical to Jack Shephard, he and Jack are philosophical opposites and used to share leadership among the survivors, but now seems to be creating his own agenda for his actions on the Island and has broken off from the survivors.

I don't know, but I think the x's you refer to as clear or erased were made with a yellow marker. That is really odd though, nice catch! It reminds me of when I was a kid and I marked down the days until christmas. It might be a countdown for when they were waiting for orders. But why in different colors?
very interesting.

Actually it's almost 2005! break out the Dharma champange! Daniel at one point said it was 2004, and I think the calendar seals the deal.

Some of the days are also marked in blue or purple.
I looked at the timeline for events that Lostpedia.com has and didn't see anything consistent with the different colors used to x out days on the calendar. For example the days marked with yellow x's are Oct 20, 21, 22, and 23. Here are the events that took place on those days.
Day 29 - Wednesday, October 20, 2004
"Homecoming"
Scott is found murdered on the beach.
Ethan is lured into an ambush and is captured. Charlie shoots him four times, killing him.
"Outlaws"
Sawyer hunts a boar that ransacked his tent. He hears whispers in the jungle repeating Duckett's last words.
Day 30 - Thursday, October 21, 2004
"Outlaws"
Sawyer tells Sayid he heard whispers.
Charlie and Hurley bury Ethan.
Kate offers to help Sawyer track down his boar in exchange for access to his stash. At night, they play "I never".
Day 31 - Friday, October 22, 2004
"Outlaws"
Sawyer confronts the boar but lets it live.
Sawyer returns the gun to Jack, and realises that he met Jack's father in a Sydney bar.
Day 32 - Saturday, October 23, 2004
"Exposé"
Arzt, Shannon and Kate argue about the guns from the Marshal's case.
Paulo retrieves the diamonds but doesn't tell Nikki.
"...In Translation"
Walt sets fire to the raft as he does not wish to leave the Island.

wow, folie, you did a lot of leg work there...
i was looking at the calendar and briefly toyed with the idea that the different colours might mean something, but i don't believe that they do.
remember minkowski was saying something about them just sitting around being bored out of their minds. i can't remember the exact wording that he used. it looked to me like someone was just marking the calendar to mark the passing of the days, maybe to avoid losing track of time given the propensity for people in that area to have time lapses and maybe lose track of time.
I think it was simply a prop decision. Like darnzy said above, the Xs remind me of someone counting down to christmas. i think if it was all one colour, it would be more deliberate, like someone counting down to something, but the different colours suggest that someone just marked the days as they passed, maybe when they got around to it.

It matches up with how long they have been on the island. I think it's like faraday said " your perception of time is different than it is on the boat" or something to that effect. Time off island is running the same. time on the island is running differently but still matches up with how long they have been there. Does anyone get this gist?
