For me, if it looks terrible, I can't get absorbed in the story. I was wrong to say that the episode blew. It is easily the best episode of Season 4 so far (which is still the worst season so far).
And the acting and dialogue still suck.

I'm not sure I agree that this season is any worse than last season. In the beginning it seemed like nothing was happening and all I wanted to see was anything other than that dolphin pen where they were keeping Jack. It did however change once things got going so I assume the same will happen with this one. I think the common thread here is Juliette. She is a really weak addition to the show and has not helped improve the overall quality. I really almost wished they'd kill her off tonight in that fight with Charlotte. But they'll keep her around a while longer because of the love thing with Jack. It'll never amount to anything but they need that tension there (because the show doesn't have us guessing enough right?).

The beauty of this show is that anyone with any experience or background can enjoy it. There are so many levels on which to watch the show and someone can analyze it in a completely different way from someone else. I'm glad there are other shows and movies that help explain LOST to some, but I personally don't feel the need. I'm perfectly able to make the connections here and to make sense of what is going on with the time line without over analyzing another series. The show is meant to be confusing and without that mystery, it doesn't hold up as the same show it was designed to be. If some can enjoy it more by breaking open all the hidden meanings and searching for all the pop culture and other references, great. As fun as it's been to hear what all of you have to say, I've decided tonight that I'm discontinuing my membership to this forum so that I can bring back some of the guessing game.

First off if you watched the directors cut there was no loose ends.
Second off this post was edited for offensive language so I'm pretty sure I don't want to be mean to you so I won't. You have intimidated me. Congrats.
Third off my goal was to give you condescending advice. Because you looked at this episode condescendingly I felt that was the only way I could connect with you. I think you have been liking LOST for all the wrong reasons. And if you don't like this episode you may want to stop watching LOST.

Treebeard, as a 13-year-old kid I would think you would be keenly aware, more than anyone else on this site, that condescension doesn't cause anyone to connect with anything. It just makes people shut down and become defensive. So, please don't claim that you were performing some kind of great act of humanitarian good will and brotherhood by using it to "connect." You were trying to "connect" and insult to your target because you didn't like that someone had a different opinion than you, that's all.
Oh, and PS, who are you to be dictating to anyone the "right" reasons for liking Lost? Honestly, that's a ridiculous thing to say and totally a slap across the face to the kind of community building this forum seeks to create. Really, for someone who claims to be so unjustly persecuted, I think you can manage to show a LOT more lattitude for ideas that differ from your own . It is possible to disagree without condescension.

This non-constructive persistence to create some polemic out of every possible discussion big or small is just tiresome. Nobody's obliged to convey to another person's take on LOST. Nobody has the right to police who thinks what about which episode, either.

I will have to see the director's cut of Donnie Darko, but generally, I think a movie should get it right on its first cut.
I agree that there are no "wrong" reasons to like a show, but for the record, I like LOST most of all for its well-written character moments combined with good performances from the cast. My favorite moment from the whole series is from the end of season 1 when Sawyer reveals to Jack that he met his father in Sydney. After all the time the writers spend ramming that rivalry down our throats, they give us something hoped for but completely unexpected - a tender moment between two stubborn hardasses that earns a million points with the audience. And that's when the show is at the top of its game - when it gets the little things right. Whenever I recommend LOST to somebody, I always say, when it's on, it's the best show on television, but when it's off, it can be one of the worst.
I like the show least of all for its storyline. It can be great when mysteries are posed, but most of the time, when the answers come it's disappointing for me. In season 1, I always hoped that we would NEVER find out what the monster is. What's cool about the monster? The mystery of it - not that it's a black, CGI-looking smoke column.
I do think it has been completely necessary to move the unfolding of the plot to the forefront, but in doing so, the finer things have been left behind. Acting has slipped, dialogue has slipped, production value has gone down, themes from the original score have been replaced by overblown string swells and horn blasts, and new characters are always being introduced instead of fleshing out the originals.
I'm not asking anybody to be on my side, or not to be on treebeard4life's side. No teams necessary.

Fight! Fight!!!
OMG, you guys are killing me. First of all this thread is called "This episode blew". Everyone rushing to defend this episode should be in the thread: "this episode really was super." LOL.
One thing I was thinking about today though, we won't see a show like this for a long time probably, so I agree with the above poster to enjoy it while it lasts, and buy the DVDs if you can get them. This show is so not E.R, or L.A. Law or Moonlighting, or Knight Rider, or The Simpsons, or any other of the big primetime blockbusters in the last 15 years. JJ Abrams has pulled off a stunt getting this thing on the air because it actually makes you think if you are paying attention. Okay, well Simspons made me think, but LOL at my list of TV shows.
