Benjamin "Ben" Linus is the leader of the Others on the Island. Ben arrived on the Island as a child, brought by his father Roger to work for the DHARMA Initiative. I don't have to explain it, Stephen King already did... Dark Tower, third book, The Wasteland.
In this ep, Daniel is searching his journal for the change, and we see a page where he has a drawing of about 10 suns. This is one of the points to what the 'science' is behind the show. I quote 'science' because it is mostly theoretical. Basically, there are 11 timelines, in each there is a Desmond, a Farady, an Eloise. Each lives almost the same life, but is off by a decision here or there, but the decisions are never monumentous to the grand scheme of life, but to one's own character. However, Desmond, because of how he was pulled from one timeline to the next with the turning of the failsafe key, has caused his decisions to affect other characters arcs, so an agent who knows how the hole between the timelines work, is called upon to make sure he follows the corrections.
It's obviously even more comlicated than that, but that is where the show is going, and the writers have tried to nudge people in that direction for a while, but people, like my belovd Aunt, who still think it's Hell, need a big push, and that is what Desmond is there for.
Yeah, you are right, people like the show for different reasons, but the science behind the plot is going to be an issue, especially for people who think it's dumb or 'gay' as I've seen written here. But it's obvious now, as it should have been that there are competing times at the center of the shows theme.

I love the show and didn't think last nights was as bad as you say but I agree that there have been a lot of changes to the show that make it different to watch. I want some of the old stuff back that made the show good but I'm so intrigued by the new mysteries I want that too. LOST style is to start by opening the new season with a lot of new information which makes you think it will change the whole course of the show. But in the end they always end up back on the beach trying to figure out how to survive. Some of the changes that were made this season definitely change the possibility of going back to the way the show was before, but don't give up on it. I think that pretty soon they'll stop introducing new stuff and have a lot of the old show back. My biggest problem with the show last night was that there wasn't enough. It seemed too short with all that was going on.
Here is a short article I found talking about just what you are saying. It looks like the less-die hard fans agree with you.
Is Lost Too Good? Could This Be the Emmy Year for The Wire? What's Ben Silverman Got Up His Sleeve? And More! - Ask Matt | TVGuide.com
I think they update this page regularly so read it now before it disappears. You may have to scroll down to find the part about LOST because some of the other stuff is about shows like the Wire, etc.

But hey i believe this is the best episode so far this season and i love Desmond centric episodes!

That's where I have a problem. Like a lot of things on the show, Desmond's power is tricky to explain, and little facets change slightly when they become convenient to moments and episodes.
I no longer expect an ultimate answer to the mystery of the island, but more likely, a multitude of complicated, unsatisfying explainations that won't tie every mystery together.
But I will watch to the end, and if I'm proven wrong, I will enjoy having my mind blown.

I read The Wastelands a long time ago, and if I remember right, things are much more cut-and-dry, in that Jake is physically brought through a door to a different time and place, and he stays there. Desmond shifts time and place through consciousness, back and forth, and it doesn't work as well in screen format. Have you read The Anubis Gates? Those were all cool concepts too, but I remember thinking it would be nearly impossible to translate to a film in a way the audience could follow. I think that's kind of what's going on with Lost. But your 11 timelines explaination is cool, and would suggest that they have a lot more to tell about Desmond. I hope you're right and they pull it off.
(Also, I should mention that I couldn't stand Dark Tower 7 and quit halfway through! Stephen King was better in his drinking days. Is it worth picking it back up to finish it?)

1.) I am totally scratching my head over this too, Redglory! it's bugging me to no end! Why doesn't Desmond recognize Daniel when he sees him on the island? Why doesn't he look relieved and thrilled and grateful the second he lays eyes on Daniel because it means he wasn't insane 10 years before. You'd think that would be a major relief to him, right?
2.) Further, why isn't Daniel totally relieved to see Desmond on the island? He had found his constant! That's a big deal. It means he's not going to bleed from the nose and then die a horrible disorienting death, yet there is no look of extreme gratitude and relief on his face either. He and Desmond look at each other like they're total strangers.
3.) How did Desmond and Daniel screw things up for themselves and the Losties later on by meeting at Oxford earlier than they were supposed to?
**4.) Daniel explains that the constant has to be someone/something you really really care about. Ok, I get why Penny is Desmond's constant, but so then how can Desmond be Daniel's constant? They don't have any history or strong bond. What gives?
**5.) Lastly, Desmond asks Daniel if the constant can be a person. It seems like the constant can ONLY be a person, doesn't it? For one thing, seeing the constant age or not age would clue the person in to where they were in time. (Does the constant have gray hair or blonde pigtails?, etc.) Close relationships seem to provide the kind of emotional bond required of a constant. Locations change their appearance and pets don't generally live long enough, so what else could it be but a person?
I don't agree that the episode sucked, I'm just posting my burning questions.
