The card game is either because his memory is bad because of the radiation, or its a time-travel test. Like Charlotte will show him the cards in one hour, and so Daniel should know them now kind of thing. I think the memory thing is it though.

If you were a scientist conducting time travel experiments or, as Faraday said, "This is when I do what Oxford frowns upon," don't you think you would eventually have to try the experiment on yourself? It's not like there a volunteers and every "mad scientist" eventually uses himself as a test subject (see The Fly, The Prestige, The Invisible Man) I think this is excellent proof that Daniel is also unstuck in time, as he called it.

Not sure if he has existing memory problems (he seemed a bit squirrelly in the flashback) or if it a result of the time travel process but I'm willing to bet its from the time travel. He just forgot about meeting Desmond all those years ago and writing that note in his book.

I took the loopiness of Faraday, along with his crying, as he hasn't met his constant and it is affecting him. The card game is a possible test for how long you can go after jumping without meeting your constant and still remain sane (unfortunately for Daniel Desmond took off on the helicopter - luckily a phone call will do it). In the ff with the caretaker Daniel can't remember why he is crying - he hasn't had contact with his constant and his mind is going.

I agree with you 100%! That is a good point.

I think the parallels between Desmond/Daniel and Salughterhouse 5 (in the post of the same name) are right on. Desmond has been experiencing the phenomenon for some time, we've only seen bits and pieces of it through his flashes of the future and the key turning incident. For all we know Des could be in a constant state of jumping between points in his life, none of which he can change, just like the guy in SH5. Maybe the "side effects" only affected his memory of what takes place during the different flashes. He already (previous to this episode) went back in time and has had multiple visions of the future which came true. The only difference between Des now and Des then is that he can no longer remember/differentiate between different points in his life.

Oh I thought it was just because 23 and 42 are 'numbers'

That how I thought it went down, that Daniel fiqured the equation some time after 1996

Has anyone read about the theories of physicist, Dr. Ronald L. Mallett?

Current thinking about time theorizes that while the movement of physical bodies through time is probably impossible, but in a quantum sense transporting the consciousness to a different time could be possible (since the mind is electrical in nature). This new idea is due to the discovery, by quantum physicist Dr. Ronald L. Mallett, that lasers also generate an electrical/gravitational field which is aligned with the light. Mallett thinks that a pair of "ring" lasers could form a column between them, outside normal space/time, making it a possible conduit for an electronic "body" to move forward or backward in time and space, limited only by the power available to the lasers.

The lasers form the ring by using a series of mirrors to "bend" the laser beam so that it forms a circle.

Maybe the reason why Desmond only saw Charlie in his flashes is because he triggered a memory of one of his jump foward. Maybe Charlie was Desmond first constant but he was the wrong one. Remember he did hear him singing in the rain before they got to the island.
Maybe he does not realize he is jumping. It is not until Daniel explains to him what is actually happening does he realize what is going on. Desmond did say he thought he was dreaming.

I also think Faraday figured out the right coordinates sometime after 1996, but was able to give them to Desmond ahead of the actual discovery. If you recall, he had just built that maze for Eloise that day. Desmond altered his own timeline for discovering time travel, that's why Desmond became his constant. When he looked in the journal later, that was a new note. There may be more new discoveries in the journal now as well, which could allow him to manipulate time travel himself.

I also think the flashes for Charlie were just a glimpse of what is happening now, before he could understand what was happening.
