i think faraday was shocked to see the note also because in the past, he told desmond that the future cannot be altered. but by finding the note in his journal that's proof that the future CAN be changed.

He does not remember writing it though, which is interesting to me, because if all of this happened in 96 he would remember... OR MAYBE!! He did kinda remember something when he was watching the TV when Desmond told him he would end up on some island, and knew his fate for a minute and did not even know it.

Just like that rat knew where to go, without being told what to do.

In addition to radiation, they mentioned the strong magnetism and we all know the island has/had the magnetic properties (right before the hatch imploded we saw everything with metal properties flying through the air). Desmond spent a lot of time down there as well as was blown clean naked after the implosion so perhaps that's what kicked his time travel into high gear.

I think that the "side affects" only affect some people. First, people who have been exposed to large amounts of radiation. Second, if those people go to or leave the island on the wrong vector. I think that if those two things happen, then there will be side affects.

I got the impression that Faraday was already sick with the 'sickness'. He was having trouble remembering the cards, but whether that was not remembering them just from memory or was having trouble seeing into the future is still questionable.
I figured he had already 'cured' himself by using Desmond as a constant but was still having serious memory issues. Maybe he was getting occational flashes of the future, but not very clear (Similar to the way Desmond kept seeing Charlie die). That would also explain his crying about the plane crash.
Plus it means that the past/future hasn't necessarily been changed becuase he simply doesn't remember Desmond coming to visit him in the past and had to write a reminder to himself to use Desmond as the constant.

or maybe he does remember desmond but doesn't tell anyone because a) he's not supposed to (b) he doesn't want to alarm them (C) they wouldn't believe him anyway, until it starts happening to them. maybe he knew exactly what was going to happen, remembered the advice he gave to des in the past and guided him in the future to return there, and then looked over the note in his journal to confirm that it was still there. that what he told des didn't alter his own (faraday's) timeline.

I think Faraday might have performed his experiment on himself. That is why he is experiencing the side effects.

Maybe Daniel meets up with others on the island (in the past) and Desmond is the first one shown to us.
