I watched this scene again and at first you just see the ring on penny's right hand grasping the phone. Then as she realizes who is on the phone she brings her left hand up with no ring. I think the writers might have done this intentionally so at first you're saying "oh no, she's married" then "whew she's not married." a little psyche out. The ring does look pretty fancy, but then again she's rich!

It sounded as though Penny and Desomond didn't talk to each other again untill he calls her and yet they talked in LA just before he sets sail and ends up on the island. Did anyone else catch that little mistake.

Yeah, I remembered that. Penny found him then, not hte other way around. He kept his promise that he wouldn't call for 8 years.

But you're right in some way, I guess. Penny has been waiting for 8 years and not given Desmond up. The phone-call-scene was so moving! Although I didn't care much about Desmonds and Pennys relationship until then, that scene almost made me cry.

In Britain, the wedding and engagement rings are always worn on the left hand. And she had the same ring on in the scene when Desmond was asking for her phone number. It's definately not a wedding ring though.

Has anyone wondered the point of this thread? Who cares if Penny got married. Who says being a Constant is some sort of responsiblity? Shes not supposed to wait. This isn't Pirates of The Caribbean. Its LOST. And we don't like waiting.

I think, if you want it explained, we can do that for you. Desmond views Penni as the one good and true thing in his life. If it ends up that she isn't in fact waiting for him, she loses that quality but it doesn't change their connection. It's not that his actual physical life depends on her being devoted to him. It's more subtle than that. This is almost the only story line in the show that is about love and how someone is able to transcend their physical life through that devotion they share. I think we know that with or without a wedding ring, she is waiting for Desmond. She knows about the island, is looking for him, and shows real emotion when she hears word about and from him. Even if in the end they are not together in marriage, she served as his tie to not only his life but also to reality.

Very well put, L*H. I agree about the importance of the relationship between Des and Penny. Who knows, it may just end up showing us in the end that love conquers all, and its their love that will bring down the forces that try to keep them apart (Widmore, Dharma, Hanso et al!)
