tovar could be alvar's son? the lost experience said that alvar was in self imposed seclusion, if i remember correctly, so maybe tovar is a son or a brother and auctioning off his stuff?

I may be just reaching but during the auction people were using cell phones. I dont think cell phones were popular and that small in 96. I could be wrong. I was only 11 at the time.
Also, maybe the diary led Penn to set up the artic station. That led to the discovery of the island when the Swan station blew. Hurley did draw a picture of an eskimo in the mental hospital in the flash foward.
Another theory could be Richard is plotting against Ben. If Black Rock disappeared and nobody was heard from again then how did they get the diary? Maybe Richard found it and gave it to Hanso so they can take out Ben while he works as a spy. We see that it is nearly impossible to get on the island. The diary has clues and info about the island and it is a way for Hanso to get there without Richard being found out by one of Ben's "people".

The diary belonged to Hanso already. It had been in his family for generations, and as far as the auctioneer knew, no one outside the Hanso family had read it. My question is if it had been in his family for generations why would he sell it now to any random who bid highest? Why let the secrets out? I'd say the auction was fixed, but why bother with that? Hanso could have just given it to the person of his choice.
