I think Ben is keeping Widmore away. I believe ben and Widmore are at opposite ends of the struggle between Black and White, good and evil, I'm just not sure who's on which side.

Or, as in everyone has a boss.. widmore is Bens.

Lets not forget Desmond was trying to make up with Pen and since Whitmore gave him her address.. He knew where to get her letters from if he didn't have the prison saving them for him to give back to Desmond when he is freed... So Penny doesn't know that he was writting her.. When did she put the letter in the book? The one he wasn't going to read until he was going to die?

I would have to say after he is put in prison, she wanted him to find it in there.. He never did so all the events continued on..

Woah!!! So, wait, are you saying that Widmore SAVED Desmond by telling him where to find Penny and then getting him on the island? That it was his plan all along to engineer events so that Desmond would be safe? Maybe Widmore is a good guy? The world is upside-down.

What does Whitmore say? I don't hate you? or We don't hate you I couldn't tell what he said.. Was he refering to the fact at the time Penny hated him? No, he had the book in his possession the day he entered prison, not after he was already in. That's why it was among his stuff and returned to him when he got out. Desmond made sure that they kept it because he didn't want to be tempted to read it in prison.

No I am more saying that Whitmore wanted Desmond to go to the island.. he knows about the island.. Good place to send him if he doesn't want him around his daughter.. He knows what need to happen for him to make it to the island... Nothing after when he sends Des to the island is 2001 maybe he can't travel into the future only the past or current time.. In which case Whitmore never would have known he made it off the island at some point..

Ok if she put it in the book after she gave him her phone number and before he goes to prison what happens from when he leaves her house to when he goes to jail?

I also thought that if Mr. Whitmore could get all the letters that Des sent to Penny I am sure she could find out who could pull strings for her to get the letter in the book.. I can see at some point between she put it in though.. Just throwing ideas out there.
