Mr. Eko
Eko, also known as Mr. Eko or Father Tunde, was one of the tail section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. He was a notorious war lord and drug smuggler in Nigeria before his brother Yemi's death. To get out of his country he hastily became a priest, but after Yemi's death, he seemed to take his role more seriously. Eko survived on the Island for 72 days before he was killed by the Monster.

I thought they would show the reason he was put in military prison and dishonorably discharged.
My thinking was that when he was running around looking for Faraday and tracking down the Widmores he was absent without leave or AWOL.
But they didn't confirm this, so maybe there is another reason.

More confusion about Desmond's timeline:
But then when Desmond meets with Penny's father to ask for Penny's hand, Penny's father asks if Desmond had ever served in the military. Desmond says no and looks uncomfortable.
I assumed that Desmond was ashamed for failing. After watching "The Constant" I think Desmond must have thought he was losing his mind at the time the Army kicked him out. So then why wasn't he incredibly relieved the first time he saw Sayid on the island and later the first time he saw Daniel? He should have been totally thrilled to see both of them because it would have meant that he wasn't crazy 8 years before. He was totally sane. So why then didn't he recognize Daniel and Sayid?

wow that's a good question I don't really have an answer for that. Except since he was bleeding from the news I thinking that indicates he had some cerebral hemorrhaging which might have caused him to forget somethings, but this only a stretch.

And if you've taken off in search of a long-haired, pasty-faced physics geek.

I've got nothing personal against Faraday. If anything I dig that he seems to have been humanized between his time at Oxford and when he arrives on the island.
Oh, and wedges are more of a warm weather shoe, Cablerunner, though they do look fierce on you.
