How much time do you think has passed between getting shot and the golf course? No one knows.... after all Elsa is in Berlin, Germany in the winter. Golf was taking place in the Seychelles (in the Indian Ocean) when? we don't know.

I think there is really no reason to think that the flash forward scenes in the economist episode were out of order.
The way I saw was this:
Sayid is playing golf and apparently meets someone by chance.
They talk and the stranger gets spooked when Sayid tells him he is one of the oceanic 6.
Then Sayid calls the guy by name and kills him.
Avellino never told Sayid his name.

So after this scene we don't know why Sayid killed him or why Avellino was spooked when he found out who Sayid was. But we do know that their "chance" meeting was no accident and Sayid was there to kill Avellino.

The rest of the flash forward scenes play out in order. And by the end of the show we find out that he killed Avellino because Sayid works for Ben as an assassin. Avellino was one mission - completed. Elsa's boss was another mission - not complete. And Ben has another mission for him.

So the whole series of flash forwards (show in order) show that Sayid's life after the island is that of an assassin and he takes orders from Ben.

anyways thats the way I saw it....

Now from one show to the next they have already shown that the flash forwards can be out of order. For example the flash forward scenes in the season three finale seem to obviously take place after Hurley's flash forwards scenes in episode 1 season four.

Whenever scenes are out of order within the same episode I think it will be more immediately apparent. Like the way the Nikki and Paulo episode expose' was done.

But I think this makes my point all the more for an out of order sequence of events, but meeting Mr. Avellino is not a chance encounter. What reason would Sayid have for shooting Mr. Avellino if we only consider what happend in the golf scene - none - they made a simple wager on a golf shot. Mr. Avellino never tells Sayid his name, and yet Sayid knows his name, and happens to have a gun in his golf bag, and happens to be golfing alone (no witnesses at an exclusive club)... Ben had another name for him, and that name was Mr. Avellino. And remembering back to how well informed Ben always is - consider the meticulous files Ben had on all the Losties, and apparently, the Freighter Four(he knew all about Charlotte Lewis) - Ben surely would have had intel on Mr. Avellino: where he lives, where he vacations, business affairs, personal affairs?, family, etc. before he sent Sayid out.

I agree totally Steph, the sequences are out of aorder, and if you think about the structure of the episode, it works best this way round. Just in terms of dramatic effect and suspense:

Scene 1 we see Sayid playin golf, assume he is now a man of leisure, with a big pay-out from Oceanic, no hint of anything else, and then bang, he shoots the guy and the sprinklers come on.
If we had seen Elsa's scenes first, there would have been no suprise.
Elsa's scenes provide a bit of back-story to explain what we have just seen on the golf course.
The final Sayid Scene, had to be the climax, as Ben is revealed, The big one, how could it have been edited in any other order?

I think basically, Sayid leaves the Island, Ben gives him the List of Hanso people to kill (probably) He is sent to meet Elsa, to find out where her boss is, gets shot, shoots her, returns to Ben, who patches him up. After he recovers he flies to the seychelles and kills The Italian.

I think everyone is REALLY overthinking this episode. I believe 100 percent that they were shown in order. At first we're like 'whoah Sayid just shot that guy! why?' then we are suspicious of our dear sayid when we see him in Berlin. He is trying to find this 'economist', things go a bit askew, he kills his chick and doesn't complete his mission by killing the economist... then we find out in the end that he is working for BEN! wow! that is all. no reason to put them out of order. it makes total sense the way it is. why does everyone want to believe that the job in Berlin happened first?

Thanks, Cowboy! I can see you understand there are deeper, bigger things happening on the show that require analysis to discover. I appreciate your thoughtful insight - keep up the good posting.

very interesting interview: Lost | ''Lost'': Mind-blowing scoop | Lost | Doc Jensen | TV | Entertainment Weekly | 2

DOC JENSEN: Some people are even wondering if the flash-forward stories in each episode are being presented chronologically. For example, did the opening sequence of Sayid's flash-forward — in which he killed the Italian guy on the golf course in the Seychelles — actually occur after his ill-fated Elsa affair?
LINDELOF: There was originally a line in that episode where Sayid said, ''I've just returned from the Seychelles,'' which would have cleared all that up. But we lost it in editing because the scene went on for four minutes. When we're presenting you with a narrative, it's always happening in chronological order.

CUSE: Lost is complex and dense, but we are very conscious of the limits. If we are going to jump time, we're not going to jump narrative order within the time jumps, too.

THANK YOU PotPie!!!! You have crystallized by thoughts perfectly. If people listened regularly to the podcasts they would understand that those two say contradictory things all the time.
