Probably just for show... but who knows. He was able to talk to Naomi without it.

Maybe Miles used it so if the grandmother was listening, she couldn't make out what he was saying.

hi everyone, this is my first post. i think the vaccuum-thing was a distraction.

To create high EMF levels. It is theorized that ghosts and high Electro-Magnetic Fields are linked since consciousness is created from the overlapping elctro-magnetic signals of neurons in the brain. If ghosts are just pure consciousness, the theory is that they need high EMF levels to manifest. Lots of ungrounded or unshielded electronics are known to leak high EMF. Which is what it looks like Miles created.

Ironically, the island holds high EMF charges. It's what altered Desmond's consciousness to slip through time.

That's my take too, that CERTAIN of the 815 people had been guided/herded onto that plane. What I don't get is how "the island" knew that Desmond would fail to push the button and open a window for 815. However, I do think that some of them were brought there, Hurley among them. I agree also that Hurley is a wild card, perhaps someone the island didn't expect to have the gifts he has. If they're brought there to see who can step up to the island's requirements as a leader, Hurley is seeing some of the same things that Locke and Ben do. Would anyone else have seen the cabin? Miles maybe.
