My bad! The only Forrest I remember was Forrest Tucker, who starred in F Troop (I forgot about Forrest Gump). There were a couple of episodes where Forrest told the Indians (with whom they were friendly), to treat them like the enemy and he told Larry Storch to stop saluting him.

I think Ben brings all those beatings on to himself on purpose, sometimes to mess with Jack's thinking and group dynamics, and also to invoke sympathy among significant losties, all of which would give him time and opportunity to plan his next move.
