Bernard Nadler

Bernard Nadler is a tail section survivor of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 and the husband of Rose. He is the only tail section survivor that has not been killed, captured, or assimilated in to the Others. He wasn't seated in the tail section, and was only there when the plane crashed because he was using the bathroom then. Bernard cares very much for Rose and feels a need to fix things, like her cancer, not dissimilar to Jack.

When I rewatched this something stood out.. How is it that Hurley by not believing in something make it disappear?

Quote:
[Hurley turns round, and suddenly the house is behind him. The door creaks open. Hurley closes his eyes]

HURLEY: There's nothing here. There's nothing here. There's nothing here. There's nothing here.

[Hurley opens his eyes again and the house has vanished. He runs backwards and falls over. He screams as he opens his eyes again. John Locke is standing over him]

Quote:
HURLEY: I'm gonna close my eyes and count to five, and when I open them you'll be gone.

CHARLIE: I am here.

HURLEY: One!

CHARLIE: Don't do this.

HURLEY: Two!

CHARLIE: They need you.

HURLEY: Three!

CHARLIE: They need you, Hugo.

HURLEY: Four!

CHARLIE: You know they need you.

HURLEY: Five!

[Hurley opens his eyes, and Charlie is gone]
Can he make these visions disappear by not believeing in them? Just something that happened twice in this episode that stood out to me.. Happened on and off island.. Any thoughts?

I've always thought of Hurley as an important character, or at least as important as any of the other losties. I think many intially saw his character as the funny fat guy. But looking back from season 1 upto the current season he has almost always been close to or directly involved in the major events that have occurred on the island.

I heard that Dominic Monaghan was really frustrated that his character wasn't developing more depth and that the show was using him less and less. I think that Hurley (and even Sawyer) was in this same boat. The show has alluded that there is more to all these side characters but is too busy with everyone/thing else to focus on them. Hopefully we'll see more of Hurley and his involvement with the O6 getting off the island once the post strike episodes come back in April.

Hurley has experience with visions from his days of seeing "Dave". He has learned to turn off the things he sees that he knows are not real. I think this is one unique attribute of Hurley as opposed to others on the island. In a sense, his mind is more open to the island's (Jacob's?) form of communication.

I am not sure if it is "not believing" , but it does seem to show that Hurley (and possibly anyone) can control the visons to a certain degree. In other words if you don't want to deal with them, you don't have too. I don't know if he can make them stop appearing, but apparently he can make them go away.

I think that the eye he saw was Jacobs and the man in the chair looked startlingly like Christian- he even had the white tennis shoes on that they made a point to show back in season 1 after jack wakes up in the middle of the jungle and there's a white shoe in a tree.
