Hi all,
I feel like this episode (4.1) in combination with the 3rd Season's finale (TTLG) show Jack on island at the plateau of his leadership and what goes up must come down. These episodes show Jack beginning his path to the darkside, in my opinion.
In TTLG he comes off as an iconic leader - shuttling his people to safety while he is completely the opposite in his flashforwards. I cannot pinpoint the exact moment that Jack starts his descent to the bottom (in this case the bottom being Flashforward Jack in TTLG), but to me it is one of two places:
a) The moment he picks up the satellite phone in TTLG and Locke says, ‘you weren’t supposed to do that jack’
or
b) The moment he actually pulls the trigger on Locke in episode 4.1.
I feel like it may have occured in TTLG because he becomes somewhat revenge and kill hungry. He will kill Ben as soon as he sees them all get off the island, he will kill Mr. Friendly (no need…thanks sawyer) as well, and lastly he is going to kill Locke if he sees him again. This is not very Jack like…and once you let the darkside in through hate and anger and vengence…well, you know what eventually happens. Beards!!! Lots of beards and oxycodone and breakfast vodka!!!
Anyway…this is just a thought, that we are going to see island Jack begin to sink to his sad future off-island self and hopefully we see an eventual redemption. Whether it’s thru literally ‘going back’ and making things right again or if it’s thru the ability to figuratively ‘go back’ to make different choices than those you originally made.
What do you think?
