Johnathan "John" Locke

Johnathan "John" Locke is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. His paralysis was immediately healed upon crashing on the Island, which has ultimately led him to believe he has some sort of special connection to the Island. He is sometimes shown in antithesis to Benjamin Linus, sharing several traits including the ability to commune with Jacob. Seen as antithetical to Jack Shephard, he and Jack are philosophical opposites and used to share leadership among the survivors, but now seems to be creating his own agenda for his actions on the Island and has broken off from the survivors.

Does one have to be evil to be a killer? Can they be pushed over the line by the environment they are forced into. Jack has slowly become desensitized to violence. It is normal to a degree. When put in a survival situation, most people will defend themselves and those they care about. But, once you get on that path....... can you get back off of it? Even Sawyer has become desensitized.... a Killer. He killed Tom much easier than the other two men he had killed. Sometimes I think the point of the show is not so much good vs. evil.... as the fact that all of us have the capacity for both given the right circumstance.
I like Jack, I think he is a good and honorable person. I just think he got off track and needs to find his way back.
Many of the survivors are killers.
Ben: Killed Dad, and orchestrated Dharma slaughter.
Kate: killed father, possibly caused ex boyfriends death.
Hurley: feels he killed the people on the deck, and his curse caused other deaths. He directly killed the guy he ran over at camp.
Sayid.....Iraqui soldier torturer
Eko..... Brother, Drug dealers etc.

Anyway, you see what my point is I could keep going awhile...lol.
Our losties are all pretty capable at killing.
It is a theme.... and yes I think Jack is too.

if locke is that accurate with a knife, I doubt that he would accidently hit jack with a bullet.

I didn't say you have to be evil to be a killer. And I was simply saying that if you look at it from Jack's perspective you can understand why he pulled the trigger. I don't think this makes him a 'killer' as the word is used in this thread it seems like it means 'murderer'. I don't agree that he is gravitating toward being a violent person or that he is going to start killing people. I think he will do what he has to do to survive and protect the other Losties. There is a difference. But once he is on that path, can he get off? Soldiers kill during war but they manage to get off that path. And people don't call them 'killers'.

were you old enough to be aware of the treatment VietNam vets got upon returning home from war during the years after 1969?
they were touted as babykillers
many were never able to transition from their lives of violence
many suffered from mental/emotional problems the rest of their lives
many committed suicide
many never adjusted back to being a productive member of society
many wanted to go back because they at least understood their life there

folks responf to these things in various ways. some homicidal. some suicidal. some outwardly appear unaffected and normal.

[quote=charlie98210;36544]

Only the fact that the gun was not loaded kept Jack from becoming a murderer. Although, if you think about it, he killed the Federal Marshall after Sawyer botched up shooting him in the chest in the first season...and he euthanized Libby by overdosing her with a shot of heroin.

WOAH! I don't know about the other events you mention this post, but the two mercy killings above were absolutely the kindest thing he could have done for them. There were no other options other than sitting around watching them suffer intensely wishing for death to come. You gotta cut him some slack for that. I'd like to see anyone take two bullets to the stomach and opt for a slow painful death rather than a bg dose of morphine. And I'd like to see any doctor in Jack's totally resourceless unsterile conditions and not take the heroine option as the most kind.

Strange enough I agree with Pot... Or whatever your nickname is. The worst thing he has done so far is pulling that trigger. That really upset me. The time he killed that guy and the time he gave Libby Heroin are really good things. Very brave.

wow. I was not alive in 69. My dad was in vietnam at that time though, as were several of my uncles and neighbors. I wasn't referring to the treatment of Vietnam vets. But these days we don't call our soldiers murderers and would you not agree that most soldiers come home and don't start killing innocent people? They 'get off that path'? I love it when someone takes one sentence I write and picks it apart... I don't agree that Jack is going postal. plain and simple. lighten up already.
