I think it is future human technology! I'm just thinking about what we've seen or heard:

The highly advanced seeming technology used by a people who aesthetically appear primitive (the foot statue builders) – They seem to have made the smoke monster (Ben's secret door has glyphs, etc. on it), and the donkey wheel. If these were survivors of some apocalypse in the future, though, these things might make sense.
