I want to say it was just set up in the 70's and that explains the vinyl -by the way,not that old, I remember when that was all we had- and the old
computer system - I remember when the math department in my high school got one, just one, but we thought it was really high tech - and they have just never bothered to upgrade. Unlike today, they figure what they have works, so why upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. I can see leaving the computer intact, but why as replacements have shown up have they not
asked for more updated reading (not that you can replace classics) material
and entertainment such as VCR's. Someone is replacing the food, so why
not entertainment options?
This takes me back to the "Asleep/dead at the switch theory in which the
ones in charge of the experiment are no longer there, but the ones' carrying
out the actions haven't been told to stop. Like those Japenese soldiers cut
off from the rest of the world who don't know the war is over and continue
to fight and take prisoners.
Desmond (where the #$@%! is Desmond) never had any contact with anyone from Dharma, he was told by Kelvin to watch the film and he did,
then Desmond showed Jack and Locke. Maybe Kelvin never talked to anyone from Dharma either, he was told by his partner to watch the film and the guy
before him etc.
