I am sure they were not trying to be blasphemous on purpose. And maybe culture does mix with religion. If you have heard so many things all your life, you probably forget which ones you learned where. And the same passage read by different people can have many interpretations.
I am not in Eko's head either,but if were guessing at a motive I think he was just trying to comfort Claire.
Catholics usually baptise infants very soon after birth (when a child becomes of "age" he or she then confirms the Baptism) and this may have also influenced Eko's encouraging her to do so. Whatever he says, he voice is very comforting and soothing.
I can't remember, did Charlie get a chance to describe his dream to Eko
or to Claire?
