I think Locke did pick the sand- but I'm not really quite sure if Alpert wanted him to go for the comic book. I almost immediately associated it with Hurley and the baseball glove with Jack- and felt that it would be reasonable for Locke to pick the knife. It'd come handy regardless of being a farmer or hunter underneath, especially if you're to go on some 'walk about'..
Some have quickly dismissed 'The Book of Law' but content and message-wise it wouldn't be an off choice totally. I think the title is deceiving for many: it is not a book with reference to logic or law as understood in some rigid fashion. It is a book that puts will power and strength to challenge established norms above everything else. Sounds familiar?
