I thought it was interesting that Ben said,"He changed the rules," not "He broke the rules." To change the rules would mean that it was still a rule and therefore Ben could play by that rule. To break the rules Ben would have to cry "foul" and would be not be able to do what Widmore did. So by Ben saying Widmore only changed the rule, Ben manipulated the situation and made it fair for Ben to reciprocate and go after Widmore's daughter.
