When I rewatched this something stood out.. How is it that Hurley by not believing in something make it disappear?

Quote:
[Hurley turns round, and suddenly the house is behind him. The door creaks open. Hurley closes his eyes]

HURLEY: There's nothing here. There's nothing here. There's nothing here. There's nothing here.

[Hurley opens his eyes again and the house has vanished. He runs backwards and falls over. He screams as he opens his eyes again. John Locke is standing over him]

Quote:
HURLEY: I'm gonna close my eyes and count to five, and when I open them you'll be gone.

CHARLIE: I am here.

HURLEY: One!

CHARLIE: Don't do this.

HURLEY: Two!

CHARLIE: They need you.

HURLEY: Three!

CHARLIE: They need you, Hugo.

HURLEY: Four!

CHARLIE: You know they need you.

HURLEY: Five!

[Hurley opens his eyes, and Charlie is gone]
Can he make these visions disappear by not believeing in them? Just something that happened twice in this episode that stood out to me.. Happened on and off island.. Any thoughts?
