Isn't that what Walt said to Locke when Locke was dying in the pit?
Tom tells michael that he cannot die yet, because he still has work to do.
That got me thinking. In the "LOst peices", the 13th one where we see Christian and he sends Vincent to wake up Jack. He says "Go get my son, he still has work to do."
Could that be a clue that Jack and the others supposed to be dead and the island is the only thing keeping them alive, so that they complete their "tasks". I think thats why we have been seeing Libby, she's not really dead. she's been kept alive by the island because, she too still has work to do.
I also think this means that when jack originally landed on the beach after the crash...he was dead.

How could Jack be dead? They explained how the crash was a hoax ,and how Widmore didn't want anyone to know that anyone survived the crash for his own selfish reasons.
