I find it interesting that Hurley has always been pictured as quite good in whatever sports or rec. games he plays.. Table tennis, golf (did he play or did he just watch Jin and Jack?), basketball, that game he plays in the institution (FF) and now the horseshoe thing. I wonder if the horseshoe scene entailed some reference to the element of chance or luck? Like Hurley playing better than Sawyer ---> Hurley's got better chances with staying alive.
