It means he knows she loved him and would wait for him without changing her number. It means he found his constant and knew he wasn't going to die a horrible death like Minkowski.
I think it also means that the rest of Desmond's life was pretty much planned out for him and Desmond--a coward--woudln't really have to make any decisions. Nor did he have to feel ashamed for failing so many times in his life. It was a pre-set path. Not his fault.
And he had a life with Penny to look forward to after the freighter.
