Has anyone considered the idea of Faraday's time traveling ablity to take everyone back in time before the plane crash, and warn the captain of what is going to happen in the future as to prevent all this in the first place from even occuring? That would explain Faraday's message to himself "If anything goes wrong, Desmond will be my constant." Since Des isn't even on the plane and he's trapped on the island regardless of the plane crash. It would also explain Faraday's crying scene when he sees the plane wreckage into the bottom of the ocean, yeah he thought he brought them all back in time to survive, but maybe changing the future can only be altered so much. He's sitting there watching his t.v. screen and realized he failed even after going back in time and atempting to alter the future. That could also explain why theres a different captain in the ocean wreckage- they figured by changing the captain, the plane would not end up going so far out of the way. Some things, however such as the plane crashing (regardless of where or why) are bound to happen and can't be altered by any means. (The whole idea of fate which I also think is big theme of the entire show.)
just my idea
