What Ben Said in TTLG!

Ok I am not sure if this has been brought up before, but I think it could be important so I am posting this now..

In The season 3 finale Ben said something to Jack about contacting the freighter.

[Jack does so with Ben]
BEN: Not so long ago, Jack. I made a decision, that took the lives of over forty people in a single day. I'm telling you this because, history is about to repeat itself, right here, right now.
JACK: Let me guess, you've got us surrounded, and if I don't do what you say you're gonna, you're gonna kill all my people.
BEN: No Jack, you are.
[Jack laughs]
JACK: And how am I going to do that, Ben?
BEN: The woman you're travelling with. The one who parachuted onto the Island from that helicopter. She's not who she says she is.
JACK: She's not, huh?
BEN: No she's not.
JACK: Then who is she?
BEN: She's a representative of some people who've been trying to find this Island, Jack. She's one of the bad guys.
JACK: Oh, I almost forgot, you're the, you're the good guys.
BEN: Jack, listen to me. If you phone her boat, every single living person on this Island will be killed. So here's what has to happen. Get that device, the phone she carries with her, and give it me. I will turn around, we'll go back to my people, you will turn around and go back to your people.
JACK: I'm not going anywhere.

Ben says that every single living person on this island will be killed.

Tell me why would Ben feel he needs to say every living person.. are there any other kind that can be killed? I think it could give some insight to who/what are on the island.. Anyone else have any thoughts about this or insights?

Ben doesn't want to save every living person. He wants to save himself and his people. And they fall under the category of living. So if he doesn't save every living person then he is dead. So you kinda just asked why would Ben save his own life.

Also I was pretty sure he said every living thing on this island would be killed. I think he was just saying that to tell Jack how dangerous these people are and how strong they are. I don't think he is talking about paranormal life or anything.

I have listened to it and checked the transcripts and he said every single living person.. That I am sure of..

What I thought sounded funny is he say that if the people from the Freighter make it to the island every single living person would be killed.. Isn't it implyed that if they could be killed they were living. It sounded really odd to me the way he said it.. It caught my attention..

yeah it is a kinda odd way to say it. It's like saying:
" I jumped into some really wet water."
There could be something to it.... IDK what.
When I first heard it I just thought he was just emphasizing the severity of the situation.
I don't see a connection to anything supernatural either.

Wow I never really though about it. The directors new that when Ben said that it would scare the audience a bit. They problaly thought it would sound good with the moment.

Well we don't know who's on the freighter, none of the losties know who's on the freighter, So how exactly does Ben know? Has he fought off these people before? Like ben said history is repeating itself so I ask once again how does he know who's on the freighter?

I don't know how Ben knows, but I don't have a problem believing he does know. Ben is a mysterious character, and his ultimate agenda is still unknown. He grew up on the island and has been there something like 30 years. There may only be a handful of people that know what is going on, but I'd bet he is one of them.

And you know that is not to say that he is all knowing. It seems obvious that he is trying to understand Locke's relationship with the island.

But back to the original topic. Maybe Ben thinks or knows that the group on the freighter are Dharma, and he thinks they will kill everyone in retaliation for the purge.

I agree with ya here Folie.. We know there are other things going happening on the island with the others as well.. Didn't Richard say something like Ben is wasting our time with things like fertility.. So there is more going on than we know.. Could be that the people on the freighter have found the island before, The others and/or Hostiles got rid of them and they have been trying to get back ever since to take care of what happened then.. Maybe that is why some of the Losties get off the island.. Maybe whoever is on the freighter does not see them as their enemy just the Others???
