In the scene just before he gets up, it is apparent that he is also paralyzed again (he has to move his legs with his hands before he can reach the pistol in the dead guy's holster).

Then Jacob (appearing under the guise of Walt) tells him to "Get up. We have work to do."

Locke lays back and then smiles.

I think the island (or the Jacob/Walt apparition) performed another miracle on him.

I agree with YOU Charlie98210, I just was reporting that some "healing-powers-of-the-island" skeptics think that Locke survived because of his lack of a kidney.

Did the bullet go all the way through Locke? If it did then, I think the missing kidney and the accelerated island healing factor is enough to prevent Locke from dying.
The real question is how did he get out of the Dharma death pit?

The island healed John, then took the healing away for awhile, then John had faith again and John could walk again. Now we see John unable to walk, and lying on a pile of bones, so here comes the island, in the form of Walt, to heal him again.

John is kinda acting like wolverine... and that makes him cool.
