Dr. Jack Shephard

Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Default Jacob in the coffin: interesting connection

OK we all know that several characters on LOST are named after 18th and 19th century philosophers that all had differing ideas on the the nature of man, etc etc. Well, I think with our last little clue in the newspaper clipping...the show's creators have done it again.
I was reading about the name that people made out from the clipping, "J...entham". There was a 19th century philosopher named Jeremy Bentham who, according to Wikipedia, was a philosopher, and legal and social reformer.
What was especially interesting is that this Jeremy Bentham designed a type of prison building which he called the Panopticon. The concept of the design was to allow an observer to observe all prisoners without the prisoners being able to tell if they are being observed or not, thus conveying a "sentiment of an invisible omniscience." In his own words, Bentham described the Panopticon as "a new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind, in a quantity hitherto without example." Now, if you are so inclined you can probably read more details about it in Wikipedia or elsewhere, but does that not sound like THE ISLAND? A controlled environment with observation stations that are hidden, where people are being watched from...and the people themselves who are being watched unable to see or quantify their observers? Who would be the architect of all this if not Jacob, who even Ben defers too?

Wow, nice find!

About the prison.... its the exact scenario of the Swan hatch! They were being observed without knowing it, and the hatch was essentially their prison.

Again, very nice find, as this is pretty clearly what the writers were hinting at.

Excellent find.. I'm sure the writers were into something like this, and the whispers, it's of those who are observing I'd guess.

I was wondering since first seeing the episode if maybe the funeral home address was significant. It looks to me like it is 1832 which is the year that the real life Jeremy Bentham died.

Kinda hard to tell on regular TV though, can someone with HD check the address..... I could be very wrong.

This is really very possible - but I think the coffin is someone we already know. We don't know exactly what the article says.

That would be a good explanation of all the whispers.
