Dr. Jack Shephard
Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Since D&C said that Lost is a mosic and the pieces are made up of who the losties were before the crash, on the island and in the future..
That I think is a big clue after last nights episode to put together, and since we have 9 months until new Lost what is it going to hurt.. hehe
Jack before the crash was strong, he did the right thing but had made his mistakes as well. He doubted himself too much.. On the Island he was made the leader of the Losties and stepped up to the plate.. In last nights episode if those are infact the forward flashes then he becomes a depressed, drug abusing alcoholic who can't let go of the past.. What would his future be on the island if they are not rescued????

I think Jack was a mess before he crashed. He couldn't move past an unsuccessful relationship, couldn't deal with his daddy issues. Yes, he was strong, and compassionate as a doctor but his flaws were undoing his potential. The island removed all that baggage, his strengths were allowed to grow stronger. He flourished in the rebirth that the island offered. All the losties had the same opportunity, just as Locke once told Charlie I think.....this is our chance to start over clean. Once Jack goes back to the real world, he mourns the loss of his island family and the best part of himself.......then he becomes his own father.
To answer the question about Jacks future staying on the island.... I think he would have opportunity to grow and change for the positive. (redemption, getting rid of baggage) He has a strong functioning family that gives him what he needs. He is fulfilled as a person.
