Desmond David Hume

Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. He was discovered by Locke, Kate and Jack a month later after they had blown open Hatch. After his failed attempts to leave the Island, Desmond joined the camp of survivors. Following the destruction of the Swan, Desmond gained a mysterious ability to see flashes of the future, with which he predicted Charlie's imminent death.

I was totally ticked at the way it happened. Like, why didn't he just run out, didn't even have to shut the door, both could've jumped in the moon pool or whatever and swam to the surface. Only thing that makes sense is that Charlie must've made a split second decision that he had to drown in order for Claire to be rescued. Sure going to miss him.

I think the producers/writers killed off Charlie, coz' Evangeline Lily is becoming a "bigger" star and Dominic Monaghan, her boyfriend still remains as big (or little) as a hobbit.

You can kinda tell she's not going to be with him for much longer as her fame grows. A bit shallow thinking, true. But with her on scene romp with Jack / Matthew Fox and Sawyer / Josh Holloway (though both are married), her popularity and (sex) appeal is rising.

So, kill of the hobbit and keep the femme fatale.

If they wanted to keep him around longer, there are many ways to do it. Locke can get shot and still be alive. Ben can have tumor and still alive.

The "300" actor guy gets bitten by a spider and he gets buried alive with his gf.

Dom has an extraordinary amount of talent (like many of our Losties) and I'm sure he can now branch out to even more exciting things!

Or...Dominic Monaghan IS Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit"!!!

I looked up this forum, and joined it, just to find out what others thought about Charlie's death. It struck me too as hugely dumb--he could easily have left the comm room, talked to Des for a while about why he couldn't go into a flooding room (the water would have pushed him out anyway), mosied over to the moonpool, dove in and and swum to the surface. It would have taken lots of time for the water to fill the whole station. The only plausible explanation I've read here so far is that he simply felt he had to die because of Des's vision that he had to die for Claire to live. So it really was a choice, a willed self-sacrifice without even the understanding of why he must die, since the situation itself did not require his death (like jumping in front of a bullet, e.g.). In this sense it was a nice contrast to the vengeful violence of most of the other non-others on the episode.

Yeah - Charlie squeezed through the little tunnel Michael made to save Jack when there was a cave-in at the caves, I thought for sure he could have swam out the window. Or he and Desmond could have made it to the scuba gear (even shared a respirator if need be) to swim to the surface - the Looking Glass wasn't THAT deep.

in the looking glass you could only lock the door from the inside not out. Thats why Charlie had to die

Charlie knew he had to not only turn off the switch, but also die in order for Claire and Aaron to be saved. He most likely could have gotten out, but he sacrificed himself so that Claire and her baby would get on that helicopter.

Here is a picture of a watertight door which has been locked using the hatch's dogs. I circled the dogging latches so you can see what locks the door from the inside. Once those dogs are thrown, the door can only be opened by "undogging" the hatch.

Those dogging latches are designed to keep the door closed against greater pressure than the wheel mechanism could withstand.

That's why Desmond couldn't get in.
Charlie had dogged the hatch.
