Desmond David Hume
Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. He was discovered by Locke, Kate and Jack a month later after they had blown open Hatch. After his failed attempts to leave the Island, Desmond joined the camp of survivors. Following the destruction of the Swan, Desmond gained a mysterious ability to see flashes of the future, with which he predicted Charlie's imminent death.

I looked up this forum, and joined it, just to find out what others thought about Charlie's death. It struck me too as hugely dumb--he could easily have left the comm room, talked to Des for a while about why he couldn't go into a flooding room (the water would have pushed him out anyway), mosied over to the moonpool, dove in and and swum to the surface. It would have taken lots of time for the water to fill the whole station. The only plausible explanation I've read here so far is that he simply felt he had to die because of Des's vision that he had to die for Claire to live. So it really was a choice, a willed self-sacrifice without even the understanding of why he must die, since the situation itself did not require his death (like jumping in front of a bullet, e.g.). In this sense it was a nice contrast to the vengeful violence of most of the other non-others on the episode.

Yeah - Charlie squeezed through the little tunnel Michael made to save Jack when there was a cave-in at the caves, I thought for sure he could have swam out the window. Or he and Desmond could have made it to the scuba gear (even shared a respirator if need be) to swim to the surface - the Looking Glass wasn't THAT deep.

Here is a picture of a watertight door which has been locked using the hatch's dogs. I circled the dogging latches so you can see what locks the door from the inside. Once those dogs are thrown, the door can only be opened by "undogging" the hatch.
Those dogging latches are designed to keep the door closed against greater pressure than the wheel mechanism could withstand.
That's why Desmond couldn't get in.
Charlie had dogged the hatch.

"Whoa!" she said. "Cry 'Havoc!' And let loose the dogs of war!"
And, like Banquo's ghost, they just won't go away.
