Bernard Nadler
Bernard Nadler is a tail section survivor of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 and the husband of Rose. He is the only tail section survivor that has not been killed, captured, or assimilated in to the Others. He wasn't seated in the tail section, and was only there when the plane crashed because he was using the bathroom then. Bernard cares very much for Rose and feels a need to fix things, like her cancer, not dissimilar to Jack.

yeah I agree with those who think Charlie should have just ran out and closed the door behind him. I would have rather seen him swim out and get stuck or something and drown that way if he was gonna die. The way it happened didn't seem necessary. The only reason I can think of was that he was trying to save Desmond and prevent the rest of the station from flooding, but if thats the case then still he could have ran out of the room and then closed the door.

Nope, Charlie couldn't leave and close the door behind him. It has latching "dogs" which squeeze the door against the rubber gasket attached to the bulkhead (wall).
The door swung into the Communications Room, so it could only be locked and sealed from inside that room.
And the outer winder was only a little larger than Mikhail's head. Shoulders wouldn't fit through it.
Charlie was a goner once he latched that door shut.
(just as Desmond's vision had predicted: "I'm looking through a hatch into a room. It's full of gear. There's a flashing yellow light...")

"Whoa!" she said. "Cry 'Havoc!' And let loose the dogs of war!"
And, like Banquo's ghost, they just won't go away.

Why couldn't they just shut the door from the outside. Isn't the wheel handle desmond is holding on to some kind of latching device?
Even if they couldn't get a perfect water tight seal from the outside, wouldn't the closed door give them enough time to get into the scuba gear and swim away? Especially if the door swung into the control room, this would be a good thing right? The pressure of the water pouring in would keep the door closed.... right?

exactly. Plus Charlie and Des had no idea how long between 'flipping the switch' and the room 'filling with water'. Fall all they knew the switch was tied to the flood... and they should the scuba outfits set beforehand. I flinched with the audacity of this [scripted] error on there parts.

I thought that, too, but I just rewatched it, and the door definitely swung out into the main moonpool room...I'm guessing it is designed like that so that if the moonpool floods, it is easier to lock yourself in the comm room to be safe. (the water pressure from the moonpool room would help close the door for you)
So, once the comm room started flooding, you could never close the comm room door...you'd be pushing against the flow of water. I assume Charlie figured he'd close himself in there before the water started flooding out into the moonpool room.
However, since both of them were able to swim down from the surface in time without drowning, I don't know why they even cared about keeping the water from flooding the whole thing...once the flooding started, just run out of the comm room, grab Des, jump in the moonpool, and they both could swim up to the surface. Who cares about the rest of the station...just get out of there!

Can anyone get a frame of Charlie dead in the water? I've watched the scene again and the window looks at least big enough for him to try to squeeze through. I'm not saying that it would have worked, but he should have tried it.
Unless, of course, he was completely resigned to the idea that he had to die for Claire to leave the island.
