I have to admit that ther person who pointed out the Jack's father info made a very good point. He was obviously forging his father's RX for the oxycodone, but if he was still alive, its obviously in the past.

After thinking about this for a few minutes, I went and rewatched the last scene with Jack and Kate (I love my TIVO). In their conversation he says "we never should have left" and "we have to go back", he never specifically says left where nor back to what (or where). He very definately DOES NOT say the word island.

On the other hand, they didn't know each other before the flight, or did they? Quite a quandry.

I am so confused! I think Kate and Jack in the future is what would have happened if something that could happen next season happened. Got that? But it won't happen.

did anyone else notice also that jack's father was sitting under the tv in the waiting room for a brief second, same scene when jack waved to the kid with the broken arm. there was so much confusion throughout this whole episode, especially during the flash-forward/back. i think jack's drinking and drug problem is causing some of this. it seems as if things from his past and present are coexisting at the same time.

this must be a flash forward-- in an ep Jack says to Kate, "Remember when we first met..." and it refers to the first episode where she's patching him up? .. so what the ****, they get off the island and he wants to go back? is season four going to be LOST, physically found and emotionally lost? oh god. maybe you're right, the drugs are making him crazy... the doctor did kind of look at him as if he was insane when he said, "find my father, and if he's not as drunk as i am you can fire me" .. also, when he says "do you have any idea what i've been through?" well it's sort of insanely more manic than any of his other flashbacks before the island.. and more manic than his situation without crashing on the island should be.

maybe he's just doing a desmond?

If that's true it way into the future because show time is still in the late '04 - early '05 time because they crashed in '04.

In the first "flash forward" scene Jack was talking into a Motorola Razor. I turned to my wife and proudly announced,

"Oh, check that out. The prop department made a mistake. Motorola didn't have those phones out until last year."

After Kate stepped out of the car my wife turned to me and said,

"Hey genius, I'll give you an A for observation; and an F for imagination."

Was it just me or did Kate lose all her freckles?

Yeah, no kidding. Kate looked kinda wierd didn't see? No freckles and she almost appeared to look younger - not older.

i know that it was a flash forward when jack was on a plane with a beard and was drinking. basically, the first scene of the entire episode. then when he tried to kill himself, i wasnt sure. when he got to the hospital and the guy said "i'm the new chief of surgery" i was like "bam, its a flash forward"

This was a flash forward. Jack told Kate he keeps boarding planes and using his unlimited flyer miles that Oceanic air line gave them. He also said he does this because he wants the plane to crash again. I don’t know about you but I think the only crash Jack has been in was flight 815 and that would also explain why air line Oceanic would give them unlimited flyer miles. Definitely a flash forward.
