Another thing that makes me think Michael, is because the actor who played Michael was asked to appear in the Season Finale but refused. Where else would he have fit into this episode?
The newspaper Jack was reading came off of the airplane, who knows where it was from. It doesn't say that he died in New York but was from there. The Ben theory makes absolutely no sense to me. Ben will not come off the island alive. He wasn't from NY, and will never see it.

I'm new here... so this is my first post... but.

I think that it was Ben or Locke in the coffin.

Reasons for Ben:
Neither friend nor family. Death does odd things to people. Jack might have felt obligated to go simply because he was so interconnected with Ben. He fought hard at the beginning to not have him tortured when he was an imposter, and he performed surgery on him. He and Ben have an interesting connecting. The news of a death, since none of us are certain what the newspaper clipping says, could have been traumatic enough for him, in his depressed "I want to go back" state, for him to want to jump. It would also make sense that Kate didn't care to see him... although, if it was Ben, I would have expected slightly more vehemence from her regarding the death.

Locke
Neither friend nor family.... Locke seems to have come out of the good graces of everyone after joining the Others. It would make sense that Kate wouldn't care because she hasn't seemed tremendously attached to Locke one way or the other. The death of Locke would be enough, I think, to throw Jack over the edge... because they used to be close.

Oh well... I really have no concrete evidence for any of this. But one thing's for sure... I don't think it was Michael. His character has lost its' importance. I don't think his death would have had such a profound impact on Jack. Although, maybe I'm wrong.

Hummmm--I'm going for Michal in the coffin..Somehow the Losties found out about him shoting 2 women,that's why Kate was repulsed-Kate may have gone back to Nathan Fillian(what happened to "Drive?) They were still married when she ran..

The funeral. I wont know why it would be michael. there is nothing he could do to get jacks favor. And we will pretty much have no answers for long time. me need jacks old this friend to love me til then.

Hey I'm new here....I agree with kbxer22 - the person is definitely Ben... why else would no one show up to the funeral and why would Jack say he wasn't a friend or family member? Jack wants to return to the island and he may have realized that Ben was right about some things and he should have listened that's why he came.

I also think that the person Kate said would miss her is her parole officer and not Sawyer...

pro: lots points to it being Henry Gale (ben) but then the questions raised is why did jack go? and why that church?

con: its the obvious answer. so it cant be...

The clipping must be referencing the body, there is too much weight put on it whenever the viewing is mentioned (either at the funeral home or in the conversation with Kate).

Anyone who is getting excited about Michael becuase he's from NY has to also accept that the clipping clearly says the name of the deceased begins with "J". Thus Michael is ruled out by the very same piece of evidence that ruled him in.

We're left with John Lok, James Sawyer, and Jacob (the last of whom makes no sense whatsoever).

"of New York" simply means that's where the deceased resided at the time of death (as in that's where his driver's license lists his residence). However, the death was almost certainly in Cali, since it seemed to be listed in the Cali papers and Jack expected Kate to be there.

Both Lok and Sawyer would not have many friends, and definitely no family, and both would make Kate queasy while not inspiring Jack to call them a friend.

My vote: Lok. But I don't know why he would leave the island.

I think it's Juliet, though the last name on the newspaper clipping was -antham she could have married before 2007 (date of flashfwd)

It's the only one that makes sense when Jack was deeply hurt and Kate didn't care.
